Production Enhancements - Complete Implementation Summary

📋 Overview

All high-priority and medium-priority production enhancements have been successfully implemented for the Real-Time Collaborative Code Editor. This document provides a complete summary of what's been added and how to integrate it.


✅ High Priority Implementations

1. ✅ Testing Infrastructure

Status: COMPLETE

Files Created:

  • backend/test/setup.js - Test environment configuration
  • backend/test/auth.service.test.js - Authentication service tests
  • backend/test/auth.api.test.js - API endpoint tests
  • backend/jest.config.js - Jest configuration

What's Included:

  • Complete test setup with database connection
  • 10+ test cases for auth service and API
  • Coverage configuration
  • Supertest for HTTP testing

2. ✅ Input Validation

Status: COMPLETE

Files Created:

  • backend/src/utils/validation.schemas.js - Zod validation schemas
  • backend/src/middlewares/validation.middleware.js - Validation middleware

What's Included:

  • 8+ schemas (auth, projects, files, users, etc.)
  • Strong password validation
  • Email validation
  • File size validation
  • Pagination schema

Features:

  • Type-safe validation
  • Clear error messages
  • Reusable across endpoints

3. ✅ Security Hardening

Status: COMPLETE

Files Created:

  • backend/src/config/security.js - CORS & Helmet configuration

What's Included:

  • Helmet security headers
  • Configurable CORS with origin whitelist
  • Content Security Policy
  • HSTS (HTTP Strict Transport Security)
  • X-Frame-Options, X-Content-Type-Options

Features:

  • Development: Allow all origins
  • Production: Whitelist specific origins
  • 24-hour CORS max age

4. ✅ Rate Limiting

Status: COMPLETE

Files Created:

  • backend/src/middlewares/rateLimit.advanced.js - Advanced rate limiting

What's Included:

  • 3 pre-configured limiters:
    • API Limiter: 100 req/15min
    • Auth Limiter: 5 req/15min (prevents brute force)
    • File Limiter: 50 req/15min

Features:

  • Redis-backed for distributed systems
  • Automatic bypass in test environment
  • Detailed rate limit headers

5. ✅ Authorization Middleware

7. ✅ Audit Logging System

Status: COMPLETE

  • Comprehensive audit trail
  • 13 action types tracked
  • User activity tracking
  • Project activity tracking
  • Automatic cleanup of old logs

Features:

  • MongoDB storage
  • Indexed for fast queries
  • Metadata collection (IP, user agent)
  • Change tracking (before/after)

  • Skip/limit calculation
  • Formatted response with metadata
  • Support for select and populate

Features:

  • Per-page limit: 1-100 items
  • Default: 10 items per page
  • Includes hasNext/hasPrev flags

9. ✅ File Size Limits

  • Individual file limit: 10MB
  • Project total limit: 500MB
  • Automatic size checking

  • Request header validation
  • Project size aggregation
  • Detailed error messages
