- The beds: low mounded ridges, running parallel. The mound over each one.
- Dawn light - low, lateral, not yet strong enough to matter.
- The Harvest Helper: bent at the waist, knife at ankle-height, reading the ground.
- The slight rise in the soil above a ready stalk. This is what is being read. It has no name. The body learns it.
- Midday: the field empties. The work is done by then.
- The lorry at the field's edge. Engine running.

- The knowledge of the Harvest Helper: not a piece. It is in the body. The field is where it lives while the season runs.
- The ground temperature - to whoever knows how to read it.
- The ready stalk - to whoever knows how to find it.
- The accumulated seasons - the field remembers where drainage runs slow, where particular rows have come up strong. This is available to anyone who has bent over it long enough.
- The names of the people who have worked it. The field holds the knowledge of the cut without holding the identity of who cut. Some Harvest Helpers have returned for ten or fifteen seasons. The field does not record this. The field is not withholding maliciously. The field does not have that category.
