Project: Baltic Sea Ecosystem Persona: The Eel
It crosses an ocean twice in a lifetime. The second crossing is failing.
Yellow eel in the Baltic: 30-100cm, olive-brown, present in rivers, lakes, coastal waters. Silver eel migrating: transformed — eyes enlarged, body silvered, gut dissolved, living on stored fat for a journey of 6,000 kilometres to the Sargasso Sea. One spawning. The larvae drift back on the Gulf Stream over three years. Glass eels arriving at the river mouths. The arrival numbers: down 90% since the 1980s. Critically endangered.
Live in the Baltic for 10-20 years. Eat invertebrates, small fish, carrion. Hold a position in the benthic food web as predator and scavenger. Then: transform. Leave. Cross the Atlantic. Spawn in the Sargasso Sea. Die. The larvae drift back. Or don't.
The eel that leaves the Baltic has no information about whether it will successfully spawn, whether the larvae will successfully return, whether the glass eels will successfully recruit to Baltic rivers past the dams and barriers and changed river temperatures. It leaves with everything it has accumulated — twenty years of the Baltic in its body — for a spawning ground it has never seen, guided by magnetic fields and chemical gradients inherited from parents it never knew. The journey was always this uncertain. What has changed is the probability of return. The eel does not know the probability has changed. It leaves anyway. Every autumn. Fewer each year.
It enters the current. Downstream. In autumn.
