Persona: The Eelgrass

Title: The Foundation

Owner

Project: Baltic Sea Ecosystem Persona: The Eelgrass

It held the conditions for everything else without being counted as the thing that mattered.

Projection

Ribbon leaves, 30-100cm long, in dense meadows down to 4m depth in clear water — shallower now, as turbidity increases. Green-yellow in summer, brown in winter. The beds look like meadows from above. From inside: structured habitat — nursery for juvenile fish, feeding ground for wildfowl, carbon store in the sediment below. Retreating. The depth limit shallower each decade. What was meadow is now bare sand with the ghost outline of roots.

Action

Photosynthesize. Stabilise sediment with roots. Oxygenate the immediate sediment layer. Provide habitat structure for juvenile cod, for invertebrates. Sequester carbon in the sediment below. Hold the conditions for everything that depends on what it holds. Do all of this while the turbidity reduces the light reaching the leaves. The action requires light. The water is taking the light.

Shadow

It held the conditions for everything else without being counted as the thing that mattered. Its retreat was gradual enough that each year's loss looked like variation. The accumulation was not named until it was nearly complete. The eelgrass does not know it is a foundation. It only knows light and sediment and temperature. When any of these exceeds the threshold, it retreats. It does not know that its retreat is the juvenile cod's lost nursery, the wildfowl's lost feeding ground, the carbon store's unlocking. It only knows: not enough light here.

Tell

The depth limit. Each year: shallower.
