It is everywhere in the water column until it isn't. The absence arrives before anyone measures it.
Invisible. Present in every breath every gill takes, in every aerobic decomposition, in every moment the deep water supports life. Not a body. A condition. The water column holds it the way a room holds air — assumed, unremarked, noticed only in absence. Below the thermocline in August: less than 2mg per litre. The instruments record this. The cod already left.
Dissolve into water from the surface. Support every aerobic process that requires it. Be consumed by decomposition below the thermocline while the thermocline prevents replacement. Hold The Consumed until the holding fails. The action and the failure are the same action.
It cannot announce its own absence. It simply stops being there. The cod notice before the instruments do. The instruments notice before the report is written. The report is written before the decision is made. By then the absence has been present for weeks. It has no mechanism for urgency. It has no voice for the speed of its depletion.
The water is still. Nothing moves through it.
