Project: Baltic Sea Ecosystem Persona: The Phytoplankton
Biomass doubled over a century. The growth looks like abundance. It is the symptom.
Invisible until the bloom. Then visible from orbit — green and blue-green spreading across the surface of the Kiel Bight in spring and late summer. From above: abundance. From inside the water column: the species are wrong. What dominated in 1905 — the diatoms, the clean-water indicators — has been replaced. The new dominant species are mostly potentially toxic. The bloom looks the same from above. It is not the same.
Respond to light and nutrients. Bloom when conditions allow. Produce. Aggregate. Sink. The action runs on the Spring Bloom process and the Autumn Bloom process without choosing either. The conditions arrive. The response is not a decision. RECOVER is being built around them as the early warning instrument. They are simply blooming.
The growth that looks like abundance is the symptom of the nitrogen loading, not the recovery from it. The community shift happened gradually — each year's dominant species slightly different, the trend visible only across decades. No single bloom announced the shift. The shift was the accumulation of blooms, each one individually unremarkable. The Phytoplankton cannot see that it has become a different thing from what it was. It is still blooming. That is the only evidence it has of itself.
