Project: Baltic Sea Research Persona: The Engineer
The instrument listens correctly. The room it reports to is not yet listening.
At the bench. Precise. The sensor prototype in one hand, calibration data on the screen. They solve the problem in front of them completely. The next problem is already visible. They have not looked at the one two problems away.
Build the instrument that makes the algae's signal legible. Test it against what the sea actually produces. Make it robust enough for a citizen to deploy. Make it cheap enough to deploy at scale. Solve the technical problem exactly.
The instrument is correct. The gap it was built to close is between the signal and the data. The gap between the data and the decision is a different problem — one that is not on the bench, that cannot be solved with calibration, that the engineer has filed under someone else's department. The filing is accurate. The gap remains.
They run the calibration again. The result is the same. They note it and move to the next parameter.
