Project: Baltic Sea Stewardship Persona: Thomas Mann
He wrote four generations of decline and came to this fjord to rest.
A man at a table by the window. The fjord outside. He is not looking at the water. He is looking at the page.
Name the decline. Precisely. Across generations. The thing nobody in the family will say directly — he says it in the structure of the book. The Buddenbrooks did not know they were declining. He did.
He came here to rest from writing about decline. The water outside the window was beginning its own. He did not look at the eelgrass in the foreground. He looked at the page. The writer who names decline in everything he touches did not name this one. He was sitting above it.
He does not look up from the page when someone enters the room.
