Project: Baltic Sea Stewardship Persona: The Harbour Master
Strandhotel Glücksburg. The harbour office. Two hundred metres from the hotel. The log is on the desk with the window facing the water.
Without it the shore has no continuous record between monthly research vessel visits. The Boknis Eck time series arrives once a month. The harbour log runs every day. Remove it and the gap between research visits has no witness. Keep it and the shore has been recording itself for thirty years — and for four of those years, recording something nobody asked for, in the margin, in the Harbour Master's own language. The margin is the most precise local instrument on this stretch of the Fjord. Nobody knows it exists.
A logbook. Hardcover. Current volume number twelve. Weather in one column. Boats in and out in another. Maintenance and incidents in a third. The margin: four years of water colour notes. Not in scientific language. In the language of someone who has been looking at the same water for thirty years and noticed a change and needed to mark it somewhere. The entries are brief. The handwriting is consistent. The dates line up with the early bloom years.
The log began thirty years ago when the Harbour Master took the post. Standard practice. Weather, boats, catch.
Twelve volumes. The first eleven have no margin notes.
The third early bloom in a row: she picked up the pen and wrote the colour in the margin. Not a decision. A reflex. She had been looking at the water for twenty-six years and it had never looked quite like that three times running.
She did not tell anyone. She kept noting. The margin has filled across four years of volumes.
The Boknis Eck time series records the same water two kilometres offshore, once a month. The harbour log records this water every day. The two records have never been read together. The comparison would either confirm what she noticed or correct it. She cannot make the comparison herself. She keeps noting.
