Project: Baltic Sea Stewardship Persona: The Tourist
- A restored manor house directly above the Flensburg Fjord. The grounds run down to the water. From the terrace: Germany is visible on the other shore. Strandhotel Glücksburg is visible from here on a clear day — the white building, the pier, the same fjord seen from the other side.
- The fjord below the terrace. The same water. The border runs through it. From the German shore it looks Danish. From here it looks German. The water does not change between those two views.
- The farmland of Broagerland surrounding the manor. It begins where the hotel grounds end. The fields drain toward the fjord the hotel overlooks. The hotel brochure does not mention this.
- Marina Fiskenæs nearby — a popular sailing destination, steeped in maritime activities. The fisherman's grounds extend from here across the fjord to the German shore and back.
- The restaurant. Local ingredients. The fish on the menu came from the water visible from the table where they are served.
- The manor house has stood here since the 18th century. The community around it has a longer memory than any monitoring programme in the region.
- The view of the German shore. The Tourist who has stayed at Strandhotel Glücksburg and now stands on this terrace has been on both sides of the gap the Nations world is trying to close. She does not know this. The view holds it for her.
- The terrace. The view across. The Tourist who looks carefully can see the pier at Strandhotel Glücksburg. She may have stood at the end of that pier and looked this way.
- The walk to the water's edge. The hotel grounds give way to the fjord. The Harbour Master for the nearby small harbours passes this way. The farmer whose fields surround the manor is visible from the path.
- The restaurant. The meal facing the fjord. The question that the view creates: what is on the other shore, and who is tending it?
- What the fjord held before the manor was built. The sediment beneath the water in front of this terrace holds the pre-disturbance record — eelgrass at full extent, oxygen undepleted, cod at pre-industrial density. The manor has been overlooking this water since before the monitoring began. It has not been asked to compare.
- The Møllebæk. The small stream that carries the Broagerland farmland drainage to this fjord. Not named on any map. Every farm on Broagerland has one. The farmer calls his Møllebækken — the mill stream, the wet ditch at the field boundary that has been running since his grandfather drained that corner. The Tourist would not find it without asking him. He would not think to mention it without being asked.
