Project: Baltic Sea Stewardship Role: The Water
The coordinate-precise knowledge of where the fish were and where they are now. It exists in whoever has worked this water long enough to hold the comparison. The position is assigned by duration, not by qualification. It is there before any fisher arrives and will be there after they are gone — held by the next one, or lost, if the next one has not been here long enough.
Keep reading. Every morning. Every season. The position does not explain why this matters beyond the livelihood. The reading began as practical knowledge. It became the record by accumulation, without announcement. The position requires the fisher to keep going out even when what is read is getting worse. The reading continues. The going out continues. The position does not offer an alternative.
The assumption that the decline is visible to anyone who looks. The fisher was certain the water speaks for itself — that anyone standing at the shore would see what forty years of reading makes legible. The position shows them that reading requires the years. The years are not transferable. What the fisher reads, only the fisher can read. The Tourist standing at the same shore sees water.
On the loss of the assumption — names the coordinates. Specific depth. Specific month. Specific change. Not to complain. Not to teach. Because the knowledge has nowhere else to go and the Tourist asked.
