Project: Baltic Sea Timeline Persona: The Merchant
He knows the price of the sea without knowing its condition.
A man on the quay at Haithabu. Counting barrels. The count is precise — he is excellent at counting. He knows the weight of a full barrel, the volume of salt required, the number of herring per barrel, the price per barrel in Cologne, the margin after freight. He is running a supply chain from the Kiel Bight to the Rhine. He is very good at this.
Move the herring from the run to the barrel to the ship to the market. Keep the price information and the supply information in the same ledger. When the run is good, fill more barrels. When the run is poor, raise the price. This is not cruelty. This is commerce. The sea is the supplier. The Merchant manages the relationship the way he manages every supplier relationship: based on what it delivers, not on what it needs.
He is not the last person to price the sea without knowing its condition. He is the first. The Shadow is not that he is doing something wrong. The Shadow is that what he is doing is structurally incapable of producing the knowledge that would tell him whether what he is doing is sustainable. The ledger records the catch. It does not record the stock. The stock concept does not exist. He cannot be blamed for not having a concept that will not be invented for nine hundred years. What he has instead is the ledger — and the ledger is complete. Every barrel counted. Every price recorded. Every margin calculated to the penny. The ledger is the most precise instrument available to him and it tells him everything about the herring except whether there will be herring next year, and the year after, and the year his grandchildren stand on this quay. The ledger cannot hold that question. He does not know the ledger cannot hold it. He trusts the ledger completely. That is the Shadow. Not ignorance. Not greed. The total, precise, completely justified trust in an instrument that is missing one column.
He looks at the barrel, not the water. The barrel is countable. The water is not.
