Place: The Future — Branch A

Location: The Kiel Bight. The Flensburg Fjord. ~2045.

  • The water. The same geography. The thermocline still present in summer — warming cannot be fully reversed by ecosystem management alone — but shallower than it was in 2026. The dead zone still forms in August. It is smaller. It forms later. It closes earlier. The instruments confirm this.
  • The eelgrass. Returning. At three metres depth in the shallows where it was at one metre in 2026. Not at four metres — the Viking-era extent is not recoverable on this timescale. But growing. The trajectory is upward for the first time in living memory. The Restorer knows what this cost.
  • The cod. Rebuilding. Not at pre-industrial density. At the density the model predicted if ecosystem-based management was implemented. The sprat are regulated again. The zooplankton have recovered. The bloom season is slightly shorter. The oxygen decline is slower.
  • The monitoring. Still running. The Boknis Eck station: seventy-five years of continuous monthly data. The RECOVER digital twin: operational. The first joint measurement: filed. The combined dataset: one record. Both shores. The governance gap is narrower. It has not closed.
  • The harbour porpoise. More frequent. Sightings reported from the shore without requiring a research vessel. The tourists photograph it. They do not know what the number used to be. The Restorer knows.

  • The recovery. Real, partial, hard-won. Available to whoever asks what it took. The Restorer will say.
  • The monitoring. Seventy-five years of record. The two lines on the graph: nutrients declining, oxygen — recovering. Slowly. The second line is finally moving in the right direction. Available as evidence.
  • The water. Swimmable most of August now. Not all of August. The closure signs still appear. Less often.

Withheld

  • The Bight of 1000 CE. The eelgrass at full extent. The cod in every channel. The oxygen in August above the threshold throughout the deep basins. The recovery is real. The recovery is not a return. Both things are true. Branch A does not offer the Viking-era Bight. It offers the best version of the Bight that the decisions made in 2026 could produce. That is not nothing. It is also not everything. The Restorer knows this. She made the decision anyway.
