Project: Baltic Sea Timeline Persona: The Inheritor
- The water. The same geography. The thermocline deeper than in 2026. The warming has continued. The dead zone forms in July now. It closes in October. Four months. The instruments record this as the new normal. The Inheritor does not know it used to be two months.
- The beach. The closure signs are part of the infrastructure — like the tide tables, like the weather forecast. Checked before visiting. Planned around. The Inheritor has a notification on her phone that tells her the water quality rating for her nearest beach. She checks it automatically. She has always checked it. She does not think of it as a sign that something is wrong. It is simply how beaches work.
- The eelgrass. At one metre depth where it was at one metre in 2026. No change. The retreat has stabilised — not recovered, stabilised. The shallower extent is now the extent. The Inheritor has never seen it deeper. To her it is simply: where the seagrass is.
- The cod. Absent from inshore waters. The inshore fishery has restructured around the species that tolerate warmer, lower-oxygen water. The Inheritor eats the fish that are here. She does not miss the fish that aren't. She has never eaten them.
- The monitoring. Still running. The Boknis Eck station: seventy-five years. The record shows the trajectory continued in the wrong direction. The scientists are still pointing at the trend line without speaking first. The room still does not receive it.
- The Closure Sign. At the beach entrance. Before every August visit.
- The water. Still swimmable in June. In September. In the windows between bloom events. The Inheritor swims in the windows. She considers this normal. She is not wrong. This is the water she has.
- The coast. Still beautiful. The Naturpark Schlei still maintained. The Gendarmestien still walkable. The hotels still open. The fishing tourism adapted — different species, different season, different expectation. Available.
- What the branch point was. The Inheritor does not know that in 2026 both futures were possible. She does not know about Branch A. She does not know the Scientist pointed at the trend line for twenty years. She does not know the RECOVER project existed and ran and closed and its recommendations were noted and filed and partially implemented and then the funding cycle ended. She does not know the branch point existed. She swims in the water that is available. She checks the sign. She does not grieve what she never had. That is the thing the branch point was trying to prevent: not the bad water, but the forgetting that the good water was possible. The Inheritor has forgotten because she never knew. The branch point is withheld from her completely and permanently. That is Branch B.
