Place: The Lake

Location: The Baltic basin. ~7,000 BCE. The Ancylus Lake.

Owner

Project: Baltic Sea Timeline Persona: The Fisher

Shown

  • Freshwater. Still and brown at the shore, open and light-filled further out. The smell: reed, mud, cold water, fish. Nothing of salt. Salt does not exist here.
  • Reed beds at the waterline. Dense. The Fisher's boats pulled up into them at the end of the day.
  • The shell midden on the slight rise above the shore. Oyster, mussel, periwinkle — all freshwater species. The accumulation of generations visible as a low mound in the landscape. The Fisher does not see it as a mound. It is simply where the eating happens.
  • Birch and pine behind the shore. The forest advancing as the ice retreats. The tree line is further north every generation. This is noted as: good hunting to the north this year.
  • The horizon. Flat water meeting flat sky. No tide. The lake does not move the way the sea will move. It holds its level. Storms roughen it. Then it returns. The permanence feels absolute.
  • Other fires along the shore. Other middens. The lake is inhabited along its full length. The Fisher knows the other settlements by the smoke.

Holds

  • The Shell Midden. On the rise above the waterline. The accumulated record of what this water held.

Offers

  • The fish. Pike, perch, freshwater molluscs. Available at every season. The lake gives what it holds without withholding. This is the completeness. A world that provides without condition.
  • The crossing. In summer, by boat. In winter, on foot across the ice. The Hunter's winter crossing is still possible here — the same ice, the same route, now with the lake's shore as the destination rather than the migration route.
  • The midden site. The rise above the shore where generations have eaten and left the evidence of eating. Available to whoever arrives at this shore and understands what accumulation means.

Withheld

  • The salt. It does not exist here. It is on the other side of the land bridge at the Danish Straits — the North Sea, rising year by year, eroding the threshold. The Fisher has no word for salt. The concept is not available. When it arrives it will arrive without warning in the water the Fisher's children drink.
  • What the midden will become. The Fisher eating at the shore does not know they are building an archive. They are eating. The shells accumulate. Eight thousand years later the midden will be the only evidence that this world existed — preserved by the salt water that ended it.
