The practice of hiding decorated eggs for children to find is documented across Northern and Central European traditions from at least the early modern period. The German Osterhase tradition — the Easter hare hiding eggs — is attested from the seventeenth century onward. The hunt as a structured social game, with rules about fairness, the division of finds, and the accounting at the end: these are folk forms rather than institutional ones. Every household has a version. No two versions are identical. The disputes at settlement are as old as the game.
The Easter egg hunt is one of the few social forms in which the adult holds the complete picture and the child holds none of it — and both know this asymmetry is in effect, and both consent to run the game under those conditions.
The Agreement (finder keeps / settled shares) is the governance layer. It is negotiated before the world is set and called to account when the world closes. The gap between the Agreement as made and the Agreement as remembered: that is where the settlement lives.

The game as a frame that suspends ordinary social rules temporarily. The Signal as the frame boundary. The Settlement as the frame's close.
The unfound egg is a recognised folk element — the egg found weeks later, behind a cushion, in the garden border, on a windowsill still in foil. Its discovery after the hunt is over produces a specific reaction: mild guilt, laughter, a question about the original hiding. The intention is still in it. It was placed for someone who never arrived.
