Process: Techne

Owner

  • Project: Rhetoric

Initiated by

A Speaker is present. An Audience is present. A position is held - a claim the Speaker intends to establish. The occasion makes the speech necessary. Without all three, no persuasion begins.

Direction

Toward the moment the Audience moves - from doubt to conviction, from indifference to decision. Not toward argument. Toward the change in the Audience that argument produces.

Lever

Carrying force: the available means of persuasion - Ethos, Pathos, Logos - deployed by the Speaker through the four parts of the speech.

Resistance: the Audience's prior convictions. They arrived with opinions already formed. Persuasion does not work on empty ground. It works against what is already there. Remove the resistance and what remains is announcement, not persuasion.

Echo

The Audience has moved - or has not. What the Speaker could not know before the speech began is now determined. The means were deployed. The occasion is complete. Whether conviction was produced: this is what Techne cannot guarantee. Only whether the available means were fully seen and used.
