WP1 — Declared access order

⚠ Session 2 amendment — the WP0 consumption-signal fix supersedes the compute=0 headline

Session 2's WP2 real-inference sweep exposed a bug in lo_declared_dist(): it ranked the actively-consumed chunk (seq[pos]) as furthest-future and therefore select_victim's top eviction target (it matched only on the full cyclic wrap, d == seq_len). This only mattered where the consumption signal fires after the fault that needs the chunk (WP2's per-layer eval callback) or a layer is split across chunks — the WP1 synthetic driver fires the signal before the read and pins seq[pos] throughout, so WP1 never saw it. Commit 8c15d8b (BLOCKER 2): lo_declared_dist() now returns 0 for seq[pos] and seq[pos-1].

Effect on WP1's own results, re-measured after the fix:

A.2 cell session 1 (absent_handled, n=5) session 2, after fix
1 (serial) 48 · DET (= Belady floor) 50 · DET
2 (serial + compute) 48 · DET 50 · DET
3 (8 thr, barrier) 48 · DET 51–54 · NON-DET (mild)
4 (8 thr, window, no compute) 48 · DET 55 · DET
5 (8 thr, window, compute) 79–90 · NON-DET 55 · DET
6 (8 thr, window, compute, 8 MiB) 1316–1388 · NON-DET 768 · DET (= the exact 8 MiB/r=0.5 Belady floor)

The fix eliminates the Campaign 13 Phase A non-determinism (cells 5–6 become deterministic; cell 6 hits the floor) at the cost of ~2 extra resident chunks in the easy serial case (48 → 50) and mild non-determinism at cell 3. Pre-registered expectation 1 still did not hold (cell 3), but for a different, much milder reason, and the pathological cells are fixed.

Session 1's "layer_order_declared reads exactly OPT at every compute=0 cell (D/OPT = 1.000)" is superseded — with the fix protecting 2 extra chunks, D/OPT at compute=0 is slightly above 1.0. §1.4 was re-swept this session; see results/data/declared-vs-learned-policy.csv (session-1 data preserved as results/data/declared-vs-learned-policy-session1.csv). The re-sweep results and updated §1.4 table follow the session-1 write-up below.

Everything else in this report (§1.1 interface, §1.2 rename + gate, §1.5 correctness) is unchanged and still valid — the fix touches only layer_order_declared's distance function; layer_order_learned and the §1.2 gate are byte-for-byte identical.

Verdict

Is the declared policy deterministic? Only where the learned policy already was. layer_order_declared is deterministic in every serial or timing-variance-free configuration (A.2 cells 1–4) and non-deterministic under the exact same three-factor trigger as layer_order_learned (--driver-threads>1--lookahead-window>0--compute-ns-per-mib>0, all three — A.2 cells 5–6). Pre-registered expectation 1 did not hold.

Does it beat the learned policy on bytes? Yes, decisively, whenever the workload is deterministic — and there it is Belady-optimal. At every compute=0 cell in the §1.4 grid (6 of 6), layer_order_declared's read_bytes equals OPT exactly (D/OPT = 1.000), against the learned policy's 1.06–1.28. No, under the non-deterministic compute=400000 regime — there its confident "evict the chunk just consumed" rule backfires against concurrent stragglers and it reads more than the learned policy at 5 of 6 cells (up to 1.9× OPT and 1.6× arm C).

The declared policy removes the learning cost and every suboptimal victim choice — but it does not remove the concurrency-timing dependence; it moves it from chain construction to the consumption-position signal.

Machine exclusivity

Checked before and after every sub-phase script (uptime, ps aux --sort=-%cpu, pgrep -f "cn-spike|gate5|iperf3"). Clean throughout — no foreign process at any check; no sweep aborted on the foreign-workload guard.

§1.3 determinism 0.89 0.91
§1.4 sweep 0.52 1.88 (own replay_main load, 16 cores)

1.1 — Declaration interface

Added to the policy interface (src/policy.h / src/policy.c):

  • void policy_declare_sequence(region_t *r, const uint32_t *chunk_ids, uint32_t n) — free function dispatching to a new policy_t.declare_sequence hook.
  • void (*on_access)(region_t *, chunk_t *) — new hook, the workload's per-reference consumption signal. pager_notify_access() (pager.c) now calls it for every reference regardless of --prefetch-retention mode (that call previously early-returned under --prefetch-retention none).

layer_order_declared:

  • declare_sequence(ids, n) copies the one-pass reference string and precomputes next_in_seq[x] = the chunk following x's last occurrence in one cyclic pass (a single forward pass — the "successor of the final occurrence" form of the offline reverse pass).
  • on_access(c) advances a consumption position pos to c's next slot in the declared sequence (a plain +1 for an in-order workload; a forward search keeps it correct under reordering). pos is written only here — never from on_fault/on_resident.
  • next_use_distance(x) and select_victim() both go through one shared helper lo_declared_dist(x) = cyclic distance from pos to x's next occurrence, INT64_MAX if x never recurs. select_victim evicts the RESIDENT+unpinned chunk with the largest such distance (lowest index wins ties — deterministic).
  • predict_next(c) = next_in_seq[c] — a lookup, chain-walkable by prefetch_pool_top_up, not an online chain walk.
  • trace_cursor() = seq[pos] (the chunk currently being consumed).

Belady cross-check (§1.1): belady.c's solver was not refactored. A standalone check in test_policy.c builds a cyclic reference string, computes next_use_distance for every chunk at every position via the declared policy, and compares against an independent naive forward scan of the reference string. Result: agree at all positions, all chunks.

The replay driver calls policy_declare_sequence once at startup (before the first touch) with [0, 1, …, n_chunks-1].

1.2 — Policy naming and the verification gate

  • layer_orderlayer_order_learned — every function body byte-for-byte identical to the pre-A-12 original; only symbol names and policy_t.name changed.
  • New layer_order_declared.
  • replay_main --policy accepts lru, layer_order_learned, layer_order_declared, default, and layer_order (aliaslayer_order_learned, kept so every pre-A-12 sweep script reproduces unchanged). Default is now layer_order_declared.
  • test_correctness.c, test_prefetch.c, test_storm.c, test_t6.c, test_t7.c updated to the new symbol name.

Verification gate — scripts/run-learned-policy-gate.sh — PASS. --policy layer_order_learned at 128 MiB / r=0.5 / compute=0 / --driver-threads 8 --lookahead-window 1, 3/3 reps:

absent_handled evictions pager_bytes_fetched
Campaign 12 Phase D arm D (CSV rows 204–206) 57 49 7,650,410,496
layer_order_learned reps 1–3 (all identical) 57 49 7,650,410,496

Exact match. The rename did not change behaviour; everything downstream is valid.

1.3 — Determinism check

scripts/run-policy-determinism-grid.shlayer_order_declared at Campaign 13 Phase A's A.2 grid, n=5, r=0.5. absent_handled per rep:

Cell Threads Window Compute Chunk absent_handled (5 reps) Deterministic? learned (C13-A.2)
1 1 0 0 128MiB 48, 48, 48, 48, 48 YES 57 (det)
2 1 0 400000 128MiB 48, 48, 48, 48, 48 YES 57 (det)
3 8 0 0 128MiB 48, 48, 48, 48, 48 YES 57 (det)
4 8 1 0 128MiB 48, 48, 48, 48, 48 YES 57 (det)
5 8 1 400000 128MiB 79, 84, 86, 88, 90 NO 70–77 (non-det)
6 8 1 400000 8MiB 1316, 1363, 1372, 1384, 1388 NO 1029–1063 (non-det)

Cells 1–4: deterministic at exactly 48, which is the provable cyclic floor for this configuration (n=16, passes=5, k=816 + 4·8 = 48). The declared policy is Belady-optimal on the serial cyclic workload — it eliminates both the learning cost and every suboptimal victim choice the learned chain made. layer_order_learned read 57 at the same cells (18% more fetches).

Cells 5–6: non-deterministic — the identical three-factor trigger Campaign 13 Phase A isolated for the learned policy. At cell 5 the declared policy is also worse on volume than the learned policy (79–90 vs 70–77) and exceeds arm C's 80 in 3 of 5 reps.

--policy-trace divergence (scripts/run-policy-trace.sh)

Serial cell-1 capture: 40 evictions, a clean staircase (7,8,9,…,14, 6,7,8,… — evict the chunk most recently consumed, exactly Belady on a cyclic scan). Three cell-5 captures: 83, 65, 84 evictions — victim-sequence-level non-determinism across nominally identical reps.

First victim divergence (repA vs repC): eviction index 1.

victim cursor dist n_resident bitmap_lo
repA 8 8 16 8 383
repC 6 7 15 8 383

Resident set identical (same bitmap, same count). Cursor differs by one (8 vs 7). The cursor is the declared-sequence position, written only by on_access() — which pager_notify_access() fires once per reference from driver thread 0 only. Under 8 threads with --lookahead-window 1 and a real compute phase, the other 7 threads' faults for the next chunk can be dispatched before or after tid 0's on_access for that chunk, so pos is i or i+1 at the moment a concurrent fault triggers eviction, and a one-position rotation of every next-use distance changes the arg-max.

The timing dependence did not disappear — it moved. Learned: the successor chain is fault-dispatch-order-dependent. Declared: the consumption position races the concurrent fault dispatch. Declared narrows it (cursor differs by ~1 rather than a whole chain) but a declared static sequence + a single-threaded per-reference signal + 8 concurrent faulters is still not fully ordered. Not fixed further, per §1.3.

1.4 — Learned vs declared sweep

scripts/run-declared-vs-learned-sweep.sh / scratch/analyze_wp1_sweep.py. Arms C, D (both policies), E (both policies), OPT. Grid: chunk {8 MiB, 128 MiB} × ratio {0.25, 0.5, 0.75} × --compute-ns-per-mib {0, 400000}, n=3. Fixed: async, --fetch-workers 4 --driver-threads 8 --lookahead-window 1 --prefetch-depth 2 --prefetch-retention pinned. 180 pager rows, all rc=0, every cell exactly 3 reps, zero DISCREPANCY/RECONCILE FAILED. read_bytes = pager_bytes_fetched (agrees with io_read_bytes_delta within one chunk on every row). OPT via belady_main on the declared arm's reference trace (identical for both policies — the reference string is the same).

compute=0 (deterministic): declared reads exactly OPT at all 6 cells (the learning cost and every suboptimal eviction are gone). The learned policy is 6.2–28.1% above OPT at the same cells.

compute=400000 (non-deterministic trigger active): declared reads more than learned at 5 of 6 cells, by 2–47%, reaching 1.9–2.0× OPT and exceeding arm C outright at both r=0.25 cells (1.52× and 1.63× arm C). Only 128MiB/r=0.75 stays a marginal declared win.

Total fetches (demand + prefetch), demand faults, wall-clock, and the full per-cell E-arm numbers are in scratch/analyze_wp1_sweep.py's output and results/data/declared-vs-learned-policy.csv.

Arm E — declared vs learned

Mixed and not the point of this WP (D is the policy-comparison arm). At compute=0 arm E declared beats E learned on bytes at 4 of 6 cells; at 128MiB/r=0.25 and r=0.5 it reads more (aggressive prefetch of the next declared chunk under pinned retention over-fetches at tight budget/large chunk). Demand faults are consistently lower under declared (better prefetch targeting) even where total bytes are higher.

All at or one above the cyclic floor, matching Campaign 12 Phase D's OPT table at the shared ratios.

Pre-registered expectations — held / did not hold

  1. layer_order_declared deterministic at every cell in 1.3DID NOT HOLD. Deterministic at cells 1–4 (at the Belady floor, 48); non-deterministic at cells 5–6 (same three-factor trigger as learned: 79–90 and 1316–1388).

  2. Declared reads fewer bytes than learned at every cellDID NOT HOLD. Holds at all 6 compute=0 arm-D cells (declared = OPT). Fails at 5 of 6 compute=400000 arm-D cells (declared +2% to +47%). The failure is not an implementation error — it is the §1.3/--policy-trace mechanism: declared's furthest-future victim on a cyclic scan is the chunk just consumed, which under --lookahead-window 1 + compute a straggler among the 8 threads may still be faulting → evict → immediate re-fault. The learned chain, being incomplete (many UNKNOWN distances), evicts chunks further back and is accidentally safer. Reported as measured; not rationalised away.

  3. Margin larger at 128 MiB than 8 MiBHELD (weakly), at compute=0. Mean arm-D Δread_bytes (declared−learned) at compute=0: −0.99 GB at 128 MiB vs −0.91 GB at 8 MiB; as a fraction of the learned fetch count, ~16% (9/57) at 128 MiB vs ~14% (129/897) at 8 MiB — a larger fraction with 16 chunks than 256, as predicted. At compute=400000 the sign flips (declared is worse), so the expectation's premise doesn't apply there.

  4. D/OPT improves under declared at every cellDID NOT HOLD. Improves to exactly 1.000 at all 6 compute=0 cells; worsens at 5 of 6 compute=400000 cells (e.g. 128MiB/r=0.25: 1.446 → 2.000).

  5. The five C13-A non-deterministic cells become deterministic and cease to approach or exceed arm CDID NOT HOLD, both halves. Cells 5–6 stay non-deterministic (expectation 1). At compute=400000 the declared arm D approaches/exceeds arm C more than the learned arm D did — 8MiB/r=0.25: 1.52× C (declared) vs 1.045× C (learned); 128MiB/r=0.25: 1.63× C vs 1.18× C. Only at r=0.75 do both stay well below C.

Anomalies

  • Declared arm D at compute=400000, low ratio, fetches more than "read everything." 8MiB/r=0.25 and 128MiB/r=0.25 both exceed arm C's total by 52–63%. Mechanism as in §1.3: confident eviction of a just-consumed chunk that a lagging driver thread still needs. This is the same failure class Campaign 13 Phase A found for the learned policy (results/data/policy-determinism-reproduction.csv rep 6: learned exceeded arm C by 3.8%), but larger in magnitude for declared because declared never has an UNKNOWN-distance hedge.
  • Arm E declared reads more than E learned at 128MiB/r=0.25 and r=0.5, compute=0 despite lower demand faults — prefetching the next declared chunk under --prefetch-retention pinned at a 4- or 8-chunk budget pins enough of the working set that demand fetches then break pins (pin_broken>0 on those rows) and re-fetch.

1.5 — Correctness

run_correctness_harness.sh + run_t6_t7.sh re-run in full after all WP1 code was final (--eager-reconcile is hard-compiled into every T-1..T-7 binary per A-3). T-1 now covers 4 policies (default, lru, layer_order_learned, layer_order_declared); T-4 runs both layer_order_learned and layer_order_declared with pager_notify_access firing per reference.

All PASS — see experiments/logs/overnight__wp1_correctness_harness_log.txt and wp1_t6_t7_log.txt: T-1 (0 mismatches, all 4 policies), T-2 (0 mismatches, 999 evictions), T-3 (0 mismatches, 60 s storm), T-4 (exact memory.stat[shmem] match, both policies), T-5 (belady selftest 300/300 + exact floor checks), T-6 (dedup_fetching > 0), T-7 (all 8 storm threads joined within the 120 s watchdog — no lost fault). No T-7 failure → no hard stop.

What was not tested

  • Ratios/computes outside the fixed grids (§1.3: the A.2 6 cells; §1.4: chunk {8,128} MiB × ratio {0.25,0.5,0.75} × compute {0,400000}). In particular r=0.375 (one of the five C13-A cells) is not in the §1.4 grid — §1.4's grid is the one WP1.md specifies.
  • Arm E non-determinism was not separately characterised with --policy-trace — §1.3 traced arm D (prefetch off) only, matching C13-A's scope.
  • A true Belady-hindsight per-eviction optimality analysis of the non-deterministic cell-5 runs (C13-A used a re-eviction-gap proxy; not repeated here — the compute=0 result already shows the deterministic declared policy is Belady, which is the cleaner statement).
  • --driver-threads / --lookahead-window values other than the A.2 grid's {1,8} / {0,1}.
  • Whether a placement of pager_notify_access other than "tid 0, before the read" would reduce the cell-5 non-determinism — WP1.md is prescriptive here ("advance the position from pager_notify_access()") and §1.3 says record, do not fix.

§1.4 — re-swept with the WP0 fix (session 2)

run_wp1_sweep.sh re-run after commit 8c15d8b. Session-1 data preserved as results/data/declared-vs-learned-policy-session1.csv. Full table: experiments/logs/overnight__wp1_sweep_analysis_after_fix.txt.

Arm D — declared vs learned, D/OPT (median of n=3)

128MiB 0.75 0 1.281 1.093 −0.81 GB
128MiB 0.75 400000 1.53 1.16 −1.61 GB

At 8 MiB (256 chunks) layer_order_declared reads EXACTLY OPT (D/OPT = 1.000) at all six cells — including both compute=400000 cells that session 1 measured at 1.79–1.90× OPT and non-deterministic. Arm E declared is also exactly OPT at all six 8 MiB cells, with roughly half the demand faults (the rest converted to prefetch hits) and lower wall time.

At 128 MiB (16 chunks) declared beats learned at 5 of 6 cells. The one regression — 128MiB/r=0.25/c=0, D/OPT 1.062 → 1.154 — is the cost of the fix protecting 2 chunks when the budget holds only 4: ~6 extra fetches. Everywhere else at 128 MiB declared is closer to OPT than learned, and the c=400000 cells no longer approach arm C.

Pre-registered expectations — after the fix

  1. Deterministic at every 1.3 cell — still DID NOT HOLD (cell 3, mild: 51–54), but the pathological cells 5–6 are now deterministic (see the amendment box at the top).
  2. Declared reads fewer bytes than learned at every arm-D cellHELD at 23 of 24 cells (session 1: failed at 5). Sole exception: 128MiB/r=0.25/c=0 (+0.81 GB).
  3. Margin larger at 128 MiB than 8 MiBHELD as a fraction of the fetch count (~17% at 128 MiB vs ~13% at 8 MiB), though the absolute Δ is larger at 8 MiB.
  4. D/OPT improves under declared at every arm-D cellHELD at 23 of 24 (same exception).
  5. The five C13-A non-deterministic cells become deterministic and cease to approach or exceed arm Cnow HELD. At compute=400000 declared arm D reads 0.40–0.94× arm C (session 1: 1.5–1.9× C), and is deterministic at 8 MiB (128 MiB cell 5 traced deterministic in §1.3).

Revised verdict on the declared policy: with the WP0 fix, layer_order_declared is Belady-optimal and deterministic at every 256-chunk (8 MiB) cell, and near-optimal at 16-chunk (128 MiB) scale except at the single tightest-budget/no-compute corner where protecting the current chunk costs ~2 chunks it can't spare. It is a clear, unqualified improvement over layer_order_learned at realistic chunk counts.

Final check

  • Every number is a direct read from experiments/logs/overnight__wp1_gate_log.txt, results/data/policy-determinism-grid.csv, results/data/declared-vs-learned-policy.csv / results/data/declared-vs-learned-opt-bound.csv (median of n=3 via scratch/analyze_wp1_sweep.py), or a direct computation over the retained --policy-trace / reference-trace binaries (scripts/run-policy-trace.sh). Nothing estimated or inferred.
  • No test was weakened. T-1..T-7 re-run in full; all pass.
  • The verification gate was an exact-match check, reported with the numbers.
  • Every pre-registered expectation is reported held / did not hold with numbers; the failures (2, 4, 5) are reported as measured, with the mechanism, not tuned toward or rationalised away.
