General question about development and state of plugin

Hey there JPVenson and you other lovely devs.

I'm so happy to have stumbled across this enhancement. It's been a splinter in my brain not being able to use Emby, Plex or Jellyfin wihtout postgresql, so thank you so much for showing this is actually working!

That said, I'm just curious and please don't feel the need to frame a period or something like a roadmap. But as this plugin is what I've been looking for basically for the past 10 years and ever since I'm into home labs, I'd just like to ask very carefully if this is gonna keep up with the latest Jellyfin stable updates or not? If you can't say yet: Totally fine! But maybe you and yourselves can already give an estimation or the likes.

Ignroring your warning (hehe) and using this in a production environment with almost 60 users. I'm always too curious to say "better be safe than sorry" 😆 If everything fails I'm the "destroy/rebuild"-sort-of-guy hehe.

So yeah. If you want to share or pinpoint any roadmaps for this awesome piece of software I'd be very grateful 🙏

As a general disclaimer, this plugin is not "made" for production usage. Its was created as a PoC to explore the issues we will face with official pgsql plugin/build-in support. As i am generally the person handling database related stuff in jellyfin, i just made it as a container so i can get other people to test it but i do not garantee that it will work tomorrow with a new version or that there might not be breaking changes next time around. For whatever reason i take the freedom to break this plugin for any number of reasons at any time as its really just a testbed.

I try to keep it up to date with the latest versions, sometimes i may need a reminder for that though. I have my hands pretty full with jellyfin server and jellyinf-for-xbox client which i maintain too.

I am also keeping current with 10.12 but not sure whether you want me to submit patches against Jellyfin master. I tend to miss migrations as they are not obvious. I’m not sure if there is an easy way to get notified of migrations without all the other changes.

The code for the plugin itself is very stable — the only changes I have in mine vs. this version is 10.12 dependencies and support for locking. The project maybe doesn’t want to take on support for Postgres users yet, but aligning on a portable locking framework would make it easier to deploy and maintain the plugin. Postgres needs retries in adverse circumstances.

Thank you very much for the insights and the explanation on how you'll (most likely) handle this. Now I'm even more aware than before, that this is considered veeeeery experimental 😆

And even though you're just upright testing your own stuff with this, I'll last as a tester for the duration of the plugin and be glad it exists while it does ☺️

So however this may end up (or whatever it may lead into) I'm already glad I got a glimpse of a postgresql powered media server 💯 No matter how stable or unstable it is or will become - I'm probably not a tenth as tech-savvy as you guys are - but I love learning new things and tinkering with stuff. Even if it may break it all.

After a certain time of trial and error you'll just stop being mad about it and "prefer the journey as the goal" instead of the goal ☺️ Very wise lol.

I am running this jellyfin for quite some time now and I really love it. Everything is much snappier than before. Hopefully you keep jellyfin updated. I don't want to go back.
