Hate v freedom of speech

can you help me have a conversation with a peer over the topic of " hate speech vs Freedom of speech". The question in specific is if hate speech laws should exist. My current view on the topic is that hate speech laws should exist. In the conversation my peer is to have a differing opinion. The conversation should be respectful and carry the underlying goal of being able properly communicate the differing opinions.
