Is this issue reproducible using the latest version of Midnight Commander?

How to reproduce

1. Open mc
2. Press CTRL+O
3. Type anything

Expected behavior

It should show a shell prompt and let me use it as if it was my shell.

Actual behavior

It has no prompt, and when typing anything it goes back to mc.

Your mc version is 6 releases behind the current one (4.8.33). Try again with the latest release and master. There have been many fixes to subshell since then, and most probably your issue is already resolved. Report back if it isn't.

I have got the latest version, but it is still broken. When I can see the 2 panes I can type commands, but when I type CTRL+O it is still broken. I can still see the output, but it will not let me type.

Can you show mc -V of your "latest" version? What shell are you using? If you make a new user with this shell on your system, does subshell work with sudo -i -u testuser ? It sounds like there is some problematic user configuration that breaks subshell initialization for you.
