Sampling Functionalities in FastEddy (Point-wise and Plane-wise) #107

Dear FastEddy Development Team, I am currently working with FastEddy and would like to clarify whether sampling functionalities are already implemented in the model. Specifically, I am interested in:
Could you please confirm if these capabilities exist in the current implementation? If not, are there any plans or recommended approaches for achieving similar functionality? Best regards, |

Hi @Armin-Ha. Thanks for your question. I noticed you also opened an Issue in the FastEddy-model repository, which I’ve converted to a Discussion under the Desired New Capabilities category. We use GitHub Discussions to handle Q&A for FastEddy. At present, point-wise and plane-wise sampling functionalities are not yet implemented in the model. However, these features are key development goals for our next planned release in April 2026. We appreciate your interest and feedback! |

Hi @jprestop, Thank you very much for the update. I’m happy to hear that point-wise and plane-wise sampling are still planned and very much look forward to these capabilities becoming available in FastEddy. My primary application domain is wind resource assessment. The overarching goal is to reduce uncertainty in measured and estimated wind statistics (such as wind speed, wind shear, and turbulence intensity) across a wind farm, and consequently reduce uncertainty in turbine load calculations and energy yield estimates. More specifically, we aim to use high‑resolution LES to horizontally propagate measured wind statistics from a limited number of measurement locations (e.g., meteorological masts or lidar systems) across the full spatial extent of a wind farm. Point‑wise sampling would be extremely valuable for direct comparison with met‑mast or lidar data, while plane‑wise sampling would enable detailed analysis of flow structures and their impacts on wind turbines. In addition, we plan to use FastEddy as part of my participation in IEA Wind Task 57 (WINSENT benchmark https://iea-wind.org/task57/). The objective of this task is to benchmark and validate wind‑farm flow models, ranging from simplified engineering approaches to high‑fidelity LES, against high‑quality experimental and field datasets, with a particular focus on wake physics, induction effects, and atmospheric boundary‑layer interactions. Sampling capabilities are therefore essential for extracting LES results at relevant locations and planes in a form that is directly comparable to the WINSENT measurement data and benchmarking metrics. |
