explainer on site how search works #36

Description

@bwprice

Would be useful when people see different data to whats on BOLD / GBIF for example. Along the lines of this at the bottom of the page or elsewhere:

Data portal mechanics:

  1. Using the two UKSI datasets as a start (? and synonyms) from the NBN atlas the portal trims out all ranks except "list of ranks".
  2. The BOLD public data snapshot is downloaded (insert frequency).
  3. When the user clicks on a taxon each name associated with that taxon (including synonyms) is searched against the BOLD public data snapshot.
  4. In the case of each higher taxon name all species and synonyms are searched.
  5. Each BIN matching a name is retrieved and all names and specimens in the BIN are then summarized.
  6. Each name is matched to GBIF and associated names are retrieved (do these GBIF synonyms get searched too - something to think about..)
  7. data is presented in CSV format for download.

Note: private data is present in BOLD that is used to make BINs but not available to external users so ocassionally the data on BOLD may differ. Each BIN links out to the BOLD dataportal.
