FWIW, I would expect there to be at least 2 years before the AFP client gets removed from macOS for good. The AFP client deprecation was announced in Sequoia 15.5 a few months ago (May 2025). Apple flagged the AFP server for deprecation in 2013 (10.9 Mavericks) and finally removed it in 2023 (11.0 Big Sur). Noone can of course predict the future, but just saying that that there's no need to rush. If I were you I'd wait until Apple announces the final removal. To answer your question, an open source alternative for a Time Machine compatible file server is samba. See also this article on Netatalk interoperability with Samba. |
