Possible to set screen resolution in autoexec.cfg?

I want to have a single config to control screen resolution in all games. I have this in autoexec.cfg

vid_width 1920
vid_height 1080
vid_refreshrate 60
host_maxfps 60
vid_vsync 0
vid_fullscreen 1
vid_restart

but most of it has no effect. Except mb host_maxfps and host_refreshrate. Is autoexec read before the window is created?

My "workaround" was to have bind f5 "exec autoexec.cfg" in autoexec and just press f5 if the resolution is wrong.
