moving the mouse too fast across the dock causes the entire pc to lag

moving the mouse across the dock too fast causes a lagspike that freezes the entire shell for a bit
this happens both with hover magnification on and off
i tried doing the behavior again with d2d companion enabled but with other stuff that modifies the dock like blur my shell and dynamic music pill disabled and it still lagged, the lag does go away when d2d companion is disabled

Thanks for the report. Could you retest with the fix for #4 I just pushed? It removes a doubled code path that also ran on hover, so it may help here too. Also, gnome-shell --version failing on libmutter in your log suggests a half-finished system update. Worth rebooting before you retest, so we know what shell is actually running. If it still lags after that I'll dig into it.

i tested it again (and also fixed the issue with libmutter heres the output: GNOME Shell 50.3)
i'd say it is a little better maybe? there's still some lag but not at the level that was in the previous video unless i speed up the movement more

im on an nvidia optimus laptop with a gtx 1060 mobile and intel uhd graphics 630 but i force gnome to use the dgpu with env variables

Did some optimization work on the hover animation path, it's on main. Sweeps used to create hundreds of animations that moved nothing; now only what moves on screen gets animated. Can you build from main and check if the lag is gone? Should be much better now :)

Doesn't happen on my end, neither on a desktop Nvidia nor on an intel iGPU laptop, so something in your setup seems to amplifies it.
Can you first make sure you're really running the fixed build?
grep -c lastApplied ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions/d2d-companion@orsso.github.io/lib/runtime/iconMotionController.js should print more than 0.
Also noticed all your videos have the hover zoom on. On the fixed build a sweep with hover off (the Subtle profile) creates no animations at all, so it would be interesting to see if it still lags that way.

there is no lag at all too when the hover magnification option is off
i also tried fully disabling all extensions and only keeping d2d companion and d2d itself on but the lag still persisted so i'm guessing maybe its got something to do with my gpu being so old?

Nice, so the fix did its part. I don't think your GPU is the problem, a 1060 handles a shell fine. Something in your setup makes the zoom animations way more expensive than they should be. Can you record a profile while it lags? sysprof-cli --gnome-shell --gjs capture.syscap, sweep with the zoom on for a few seconds, ctrl+c, attach the file here. And if you get a chance, try the same sweep without your dgpu env vars.

i've tried turning off the env vars and running the shell in the intel uhd graphics but the issue was still there i also tried using my laptops screen and while the cursor wasnt lagging other parts like videos playing and other moving stuff etc were still being affected

I can see some dock icon events taking a few ms during a fast sweep, and I found some redundant work around the neighbor zoom too taht I'm working on.

Could you try one last small thing when you get a chance? Set neighbor scale to 1 in advanced settings and do the same sweep. Tell me if it feels the same.
