More Dynamic Religion Mappings #2983

(Originally discussed in #2784)

From China Section

  • Buddhism
    • Dhyana
    • Vinaya
    • Sukhavati
    • Yogacara
    • Avatamsaka
  • Vedic/Agamic (Hindu)
    • Pundarika
  • Given how diverse faiths in the region are, setting up mappings, especially for things like Buddhism, might not be perfect because they would likely just result in chunks of faiths separated by regions, instead of the more diverse setup seen in the base game. Would it be worth looking into if the converter could be setup to allow multiple CK3 faiths to be set in one mapping and have it choose one of them randomly, allowing a more random setup throughout India/Asia?

From Korea Section

  • As with the other religion mappings for things like Buddhism, we could just map them based off regions (more or less how they will be defined here), or we could look into allowing multiple faiths to be mapped and having one chosen at random.
    • Buddhism in Korea -> Vinaya ? (just based off the fact that its the main Buddhist faith shown in the region in CK3)
    • Hindu in Korea -> Pundarika ? (just based off the fact that its the main Hindu faith shown in the region in CK3)

From Japan Section

  • As with the other regions, mapping for things like Buddhism, as of now, would need to be handled through regions, but could maybe be setup eventually to allow some randomization in those religions' mappings.
  • Historically, it seems like Buddhism didn't really begin spreading throughout Japan until at least the 5-7th century, so that brings up the question on what to do if Buddhism never spreads throughout Japan in a converted save, especially when converting to EU4/EU5?
    • For reference, according to it's wiki, Shugendo is a "syncretic Esoteric Buddhist religion" that seems to have a lot of native Japanese folk traditions/Shinto influence. In CK3, it is part of the "Shintoist" religion. Also, it seems like faiths that were heavily influenced by other Eastern faiths (largely Buddhism) represent that with the "Immaterial Harmony" doctrine, making them see each other as Righteous.
      • Given that mountain worship seems to have been prevalent in Japan, it'd likely be better to just consider Shugendo the faith representing that, and if it gets the "Immaterial Harmony" doctrine, that would represent it being syncretized with Buddhism.
      • Since the converter can't detect what counties are mountains when setting up the faith mappings, this would likely need to be handled by a game_start on_action that converts any Shinto county that is mainly mountains to be Shugendo (or maybe just have a high chance of it so there can actually be a nice mix of Shinto/Shugendo since Japan has a lot of mountains)
    • For the syncretization of Shinto and Buddhism, that would likely be represented by the Shintoist faiths being given the "Immaterial Harmony" doctrine.
      • A game_start on_action could be made that checks if Buddhism is present in Japan, and how many counties/characters. If it is prevalent enough, let it keep the doctrine, otherwise remove it. Then, if Shinto starts the game not being syncretized, maybe have some event/decision that allows an Emperor of Japan (or maybe some other really influential Shinto ruler if e_japan doesn't exist) to promote their syncretiziation, giving Shinto the doctrine later.
    • This is more for the EU4/EU5 converters, but should pure Shinto/Shugendo in CK3 be treated the same as "Shinbutsu" in terms of mappings to simplify things, or should they get their own custom religions to represent Shinto without Buddhist influence? (For reference, "shinbutsu-shūgō" seems to be what they refer to the mixing of Shinto and Buddhism, to differentiate it from purely Shinto beliefs, like what is represented in Imperator)

From Southeast Asia Section

  • Hindu (These descriptions don't necessarily mean we need to base the mappings this way, just that its how the base game is setup in CK3):
    • Shaivite (Main Hindu faith around region)
    • Vaishnavism (Spotted around region; parts in Indochina and around Java)
  • Buddhism (These descriptions don't necessarily mean we need to base the mappings this way, just that its how the base game is setup in CK3):
    • Dhyana (Mainly around Vietnam, southern China)
    • Theraveda (Around Burma)
    • Ari (Around Burma)
    • Mahayana (All around region, from Malay Peninsula, Borneo, Sumatra, Java)
    • Vajrayana (Around north Sumatra, spotted around Philippines)
    • Acharya (Mainly around Bai peoples)

Overall Thoughts

  • It might be good to look into whether the converter can be made to allow some randomization in faith mappings. For religions like Buddhism/Hinduism, those are very diverse in CK3, but when mapping to them by regions, you'll always end up with the same exact schools of thought/faiths ending up in the same places, and typically in larger chunks.
