Install fails on Mac Silicon

This is the case, there is no /opt/homebrew/Cellar/gdb-multiarch directory.

I have the same issue, Xcode 16.2 on an MacBook with M1 and Sequoia.

It seems that the configuration simply does not build the binaries. It fails when trying to rename them, but it's a previous step (make install) which does not install the binaries.

It seems that GDB simply does not compile for arm silicon. It's too bad that it 'fails silently'.

You can get around this, but in a very annoying way:

1. Install homebrew (an extra copy) in /usr/local/bin/
2. arch -x86_64 /usr/local/bin/brew install gdb Note that this is the homebrew core version. It's configured for all targets anyway.

This might not (probably not?) won't support debugging apple silicon targets, unless you use a gdb server for apple silicon, but then we are back where we started.

This is sloppy since it requires having an extra homebrew hanging around that doesn't know about the other one.

GDB could probably be built with the apple silicon homebrew with --host set to an x86_64 target, but it would require a bunch of tooling installed with that as a prefix, since the autoconf uses the host setting as a prefix for its required tooling. You could set up a bunch of symlinks or something but that sounds like hell.

this solution might work as well. In my case it should be OK, since I am not trying to debug local executables, but rather just use gdb.

My suggestions:

1. If you need to use a remote target, e.g. JTAG or a target with gdbserver, use either the 'x86_64 second homebrew' gdb recipe, or the lima solution.
2. If you can compile your local targets to x86_64 to debug, use the second homebrew solution.
3. If neither of these are appropriate, just use LLDB.

As for this recipe, I would suggest detecting arm silicon and returning an error.

This works if you --enable-targets=all and set a target

I got it working with:

./configure --disable-debug --disable-dependency-tracking  --prefix=/usr/local
  --with-gmp=/opt/homebrew/Cellar/gmp/6.3.0/ --with-mpfr=/opt/homebrew/Cellar/mpfr/4.2.1/
  --enable-interwork --enable-multilib --with-python=/opt/homebrew/bin/python3
  --with-system-zlib --disable-binutils --with-lzma=/opt/homebrew/Cellar/xz/5.6.4/
  --enable-targets=all --target=arm-none-eabi

This recipe could be fixed by detecting apple silicon and setting a mostly bogus target.

make install will likely fail, and anyway tries to install under the (incorrect) name arm-none-eabi-gdb.

I think I still have to play with it to get the datadir and such working correctly.

I think you can fix this by using --program-prefix=yourname

@sdetweil you don't need this recipe anymore. Just brew install gdb which will get you the gdb you need with multiarch support.

If this recipe is no longer needed, can the README be updated and/or the repo be archived? Presumably the one in brew is going to be kept up to date while this one will languish, and it would be nice to be on a current version.
