Error in initializing boundary conditions for FIRK BVP solvers #457

For solving a two-point boundary value problem using SciML FIRK solvers (RadauIIa5, in this case) I find that the solution process does not treat the initial guess values properly, either by using a vector initial guess or a previously calculated solution object. As shown in the accompanying MWE output, the boundary condition function at t=0 (function bca! in the MWE shown here) is first called, and it uses the proper values of the state variables from the initial guess. Then the function bcb!, at t=1, is called for the first time and it uses the state variables’ guessed values at t=0, that is, the values for the wrong boundary condition. It takes the 6th call to bcb! for the proper values for t=1 to appear.
This issue makes solution of a complex, nonlinear two-point BVP by the continuation method impractical, since no matter how close the guess is to the converged solution, the use of incorrect starting values in the t=1 boundary condition function may give potentially exception-producing results.

Minimal Reproducible Example 👇

Description of the MWE: A simple, linear, thermal problem of a bar of material extending from t=0 to t=1, with uniform internal heat generation. At t=0 the temperature is fixed at 100 degrees C and the axial heat flow is zero. At t=1 the heat flow is convective with an unknown coefficient of convection and an environmental temperature of 20 degrees C. I use a FIRK solver (the same method as in my actual, highly nonlinear problem) to solve for the temperature distribution and the convective coefficient.

In the first call to the RaduaIIa5 solver I use a vector of vectors as the initial guess. These values are from a converged case. In the second call to the solver I use a solution (sol1) object as the initial guess. I print the value part of the dual numbers that represent the three state variables (temperature, heat flux, and convective coefficient) for every time the boundary condition functions are called.
