Feature request: Influxdb V2.x compatibility and/or history api for tracks and playback

Has there been any work on updating from the compatibility with influx 1.x to 2.x for the history and track features? Any plans?

@bradharley There is some work underway by @tkurki to add history API support to Infludbv2.
I believe this is close to release but will defer to @tkurki as to what features will be supported.

So if I understand correctly you'd like to

• display past track
• playback: streaming past data

To recap what we have

• History playback - stream past values as if they were received "now". Afaik only supported by signalk-to-influxdb for InfluxDb v1. Support in Freeboard
• History API - the ability to retrieve historical values as time series data. Support in signalk-to-influxdb2 for InfluxDB2 and signalk-parquet. Freeboard does not use this
• Preliminary Track api, with incompatible implementations in signalk-tracks and at least in signalk-to-influxdb. Freeboard has this.

What I've been working on lately is enhancements to History API, for better integration between plugins and server and for making it available as a service for other plugins, directly accessible with no need for http calls. I just need to finish testing changes in signalk-to-influxdb2, and coordinate with signalk-parquet as I think it is currently not compatible. These won't be any help to you as I understand it. Except a bit of a sidetrack: once these changes are merged pmtiles plugin will be able to generate tracks as vector chart layers, that will allow you to show older tracks in Freeboard, but not recent, "up to this moment" tracks.

Adding playback to signalk-to-influxdb2 is not high on my priority list, would be great if somebody would contribute that addition.

Then I'd like to get our act together for tracks API

• add openapi spec for it
• add provider system in server for it, like History API
• align implementations in signalk-tracks, signalk-to-influxdb2 and Freeboard, as well as signalk-parquet

Thank you for the comprehensive response. I understand all the moving parts and appreciate all the work. I have the tracks plugin working just fine and my own implementation via grafana of historic position, it's just nice in Freeboard to pull older "tracks" and have playback, but that's really just a nice to have. @tkurki - I'm working the backlog. Can you tell me if there has been any work that might be relevant to this? I'm seeing lots of posts asking about history, tracks, influxV2. It is not clear to me where things stand on this general topic.

@joelkoz sorry I never answered you:

• History API is working with multiple providers available (influx 1 & 2, parquet, questdb, even KIP), some enhancements to follow
• Track API about to be merged to server with implementation ongoing & to be followed

For Freeboard Tracks API is probably most relevant:

• add support for Tracks API once published
• deprecate/remove the support for earlier, never really properly specified track related features
• add new features (?) that Tracks API supports

History API would allow Freeboard extensions to backfill timeseries data when Freeboard loads. Don't really know if there's anything in Freeboard proper that would benefit from backfilling?
