Smaller quotation marks and apostrophe variants

Hello,

I've been using Merriweather as my main font in my Kobo ereader.

One thing that I've noticed at least in ereading format that the quotation marks and apostrophe are very large compared to other fonts. While reading it is sometimes hard to recognize when a characters line starts and ends as the large marks take a normal character slot and do not emphasize the quotation of character speaking in the book.

Would it be possible to have smaller variant of these glyphs for mainly ereading purposes or is it out of reach for the kind of typeface you are creating?

Thanks for letting me know! The original Merriweather was meant to be used in pretty small sizes and with low-resolution screens, so I made all the details brutally strong. Partly I think this was appropriate, but I think I went too far in places. Like the Quotes. I will discuss with Google if they let me tone them down or not. In the meantime, a new version is coming, which has multiple optical sizes meant for everything from 6 to 144 pt. The new version's large optical size will have smaller quotes. which means that even if Google does not permit change, you could choose, let's say a 12pt or 14 pt version and get smaller quotes that way. Do you inject Meriweather into your reader or did it come with it?

That's good to hear and I understand the design choices!

Does the combining of two different pt sizes require the use of, for example, FontForge to create a new combination of the preferred quotes and other fonts? The font version I now use is downloaded straight from here in Github and I'm using the one in your repo. I really like the default size of all the letters!

I have a Kobo Libra 2 and I've injected the font in the device as the default font selection is quite small. I've also enabled kerning with other software to get a more realistic view of the whole typeface.

I'll link few pictures in this post to give a better idea of the size of the quotes and apostrophes in this kind of device. I'll also link a comparison of Kobo's default selection which uses Georgia and I tried to match line height and font size the best I could between these.

To my eye the gap between quote marks is quite big and the size of the also which is notable also on the commas. To me smaller marks would emphasize the start of quote etc a bit better!

If there is some test version of these upcoming font sizes I'm more then eager to test then and provide feedback if needed!
