Secure Memory Cleanup - Quick Reference

TL;DR

Always use context managers for sensitive data:

from signer import SecureKeyHandle, SecureSessionCredentials, SecureVariableWrapper

# Private keys
with SecureKeyHandle(key_bytes) as handle:
    sig = handle.sign(tx_hash)

# Session tokens
with SecureSessionCredentials(token_bytes) as creds:

Key principle: Memory automatically wiped after the with block, even if exception occurs.

Mistake 1: Not Using Context Manager

Platform-Specific Notes

Linux

  • mlock: Available via libc.mlock
  • Requires: CAP_IPC_LOCK capability or RLIMIT_MEMLOCK limit
  • Check: ulimit -l (should be > 65536)
  • Enable: ulimit -l unlimited or setcap cap_ipc_lock=+ep /usr/bin/node

macOS

  • mlock: Available via libc.mlock
  • Works: Without special privileges
  • No configuration needed: Works out of the box

Windows

  • VirtualLock: Available in kernel32.dll
  • Works: For processes with appropriate privileges
  • Graceful degradation: Warnings logged if unavailable

Troubleshooting

"mlock unavailable" Warning

Cause: Process lacks CAP_IPC_LOCK (Linux) or equivalent privilege

Solution:

# Linux
ulimit -l unlimited
# or
setcap cap_ipc_lock=+ep /usr/bin/node

# Then restart application

"Neither stellar_sdk nor PyNaCl installed"

Cause: Cryptography library not available

Solution:

pip install stellar-sdk
# or
pip install PyNaCl

"tx_hash must be exactly 32 bytes"

Cause: Signing requires exactly 32-byte hash

Solution:

# Ensure hash is exactly 32 bytes

"Called outside an active signing scope"

Cause: Trying to sign without context manager

Solution:
