Hangs at login:

Hi, i tried to run this and i do get to the login: prompt, but when i type "root" CR, the cursor just moves to the beginning of the line and nothing else happens. this is with PDP-11 simulator Open SIMH V4.1-0 Current git commit id: 4d383732

any ideas? i think it would be so cool to restore the source code of everything here, the kernel especially, and i have B working too.

Hi,

I believe you'd need LF for new lines for this version of UNIX. I seem to recall root followed by Ctrl+J works. It also works on your emulator - I was having issues with SIMH in the beginning iirc but eventually I got it to boot under SIMH as well.

Hahaha, how silly of me, i should have tried that. very nice that it's working. some tooling for working with the filesystem would be nice, would make it easy to get things in and out of the system. i'll see what i can do

I've long wanted to write a filesystem tool for early UNIX, never quite got around to doing that. I briefly had the idea of disassembling the kernels as well, but gave up pretty quickly last year. I'm happy to contribute if you want to disassemble anything (and if I have free time, that is) - I've written a crude IDA loader for PDP-11 a.out binaries last year https://github.com/TheBrokenPipe/PDP-11-UNIX-IDA-Loader.

Well i have this FUSE thing here which i've used for v4-v6: http://squoze.net/UNIX/fs/ (still not pushed to github, grrr) i would expect the main difference to v1 to be in the superblock. maybe adapting it to v1 won't be so hard

There's also Warren's mkfs program for V1-V3ish https://github.com/DoctorWkt/unix-jun72/blob/master/tools/mkfs.c. I might work on something to convert between UNIX fs and tar later (like in 5 years lol). What I also kinda want to do is a forensics tool for inspecting slack space and etc, like what I've done for the tape formats (https://github.com/TheBrokenPipe/UNIX-DECTape-Reader).
