As we come closer to production, we need outside feedback to see what changes need to be made.

First step, we need feedback on deprecating sift #273. The new version of sift is the lexicon. The majors needs for feedback are:

• Is every lexicon page functional?
• Does every lexicon page contain (at least) all the information on sift?
• Is it clear what the information is and where links go?

Additionally, we need feedback for the overall structure of the site:

• Is the layout of the website clear and usable?
• Do the structure of the urls make sense?

All these questions need to be answered from the perspective of someone who is familiar with the old site, as well as someone who is new to Macrostrat.

Once all of this is established, we can start redirecting sift urls to lexicon pages.

The following is a quick first pass. Some of these (e.g., the first) are suggested rewording of descriptions. others are problems. bold highlights major issues.

• Prevalent taxa doesn’t seem to work or something is very problematic with them: https://dev.macrostrat.org/lex/lithologies/48
• Column view does not have summary stats (https://dev.macrostrat.org/columns/802, compare https://macrostrat.org/sift/#/column/802). Most notable here are lack of area and thickness, but other summaries, like environment/fossils also possibly useful. Of course big improvement is nice column rendering. Ideally some (fossils especially, but also our own measurements and SGP samples/measurements) would be represented in the column; the “Myr” callout for gap duration needs a label: “33.2 Myr hiatus” or something, otherwise many will infer that number being the age at that point.
• https://dev.macrostrat.org: some of this might be helped by making sure this page is rocks solid and extremely easy to get to the "best" of what we offer. Right now it doesn't really do that, but presumably this is the subject of a different thread. Lot's of suggestions there too.
• View linked units (e.g., https://dev.macrostrat.org/lex/units?environ_id=1&color=#B8B8E6&name=peritidal). I would find this much more helpful if results were collapsed on concept and/or strat name, with a summary of number of units/columns provided in parentheses.
• Strat Concepts: groupings and associated metadata for strat names and/or hierarchies that are applied to the same set of rocks.
• Columns do not show up on the map when in satellite view (https://dev.macrostrat.org/lex/strat-concepts/4273), or the columns aren’t really visible.
• Column view does not appear to have a way to access column group and column group is not even identified on column view. That is useful aspect of sift (https://macrostrat.org/sift/#/group/6); Leixcon has it, apparently (https://dev.macrostrat.org/columns/groups/3), but it is not accessible from column view.
• Lexicon autocomplete: the results are all hidden beneath closed sections so you can’t see the autocomplete results as you type, which kind of defeats the point of autocomplete; opening the sections reveals a long single-column list, vertically stacked, for each section. But you have to stop typing to open the result panels and see what you hit; I would find this much, much more effective if the sections were already expanded so results were visible instantly as you type, like they are in the current sift search bar; there is space laterally to do this, at least on larger format screen
• Lexicon autocomplete: strat names are left out entirely, which means that strat_names without a concept are invisible to autocomplete and search, which is not acceptable; strat names with no concept (concept_id=0) must be returned in autocomplete and identified separately from concepts.
• Lexicon autocomplete: sometimes sections for results (e.g., “structures”, “minerals”) are shown for a search result even though there is nothing in those sections. Try CC11 in search for an example of 4 sections returned, only 1 of which has a result (intervals).
• “Timescales”: Groups of intervals used together to span intervals of time
• "Lithologies” Names and hierarchies for geological materials
• “Units” Lithologically and chronologically defined building blocks for columns, often representing a strat name
• “Fossils” Fossil taxonomic occurrences from the Paleobiology Database linked to Macrostrat units
• https://dev.macrostrat.org/lex/environments/1: View linked fossils -> View linked PBDB fossil collections
• Environ wheel (https://dev.macrostrat.org/lex/environments/1) needs clarified; marine: marine = marine “indet” or what? Finer parsing might be useful (looks like type is lowest level), at least on mouseover?
• https://dev.macrostrat.org/lex: columns aren’t accessible from this page. I would at least make the column count box linkable to our main column explorer page. this is arguably one of the most important views of macrostrat and sift had it on the bottom (https://macrostrat.org/sift). I use that all the time.
• https://dev.macrostrat.org: When people hear "Lexicon" they probably hear stratigraphic names, I'm guessing. This is more than a "Lexicon" so the description needs to be better here. Maybe "Macrostrat Lexicon": Comprehensive searchable list of stratigraphic names, lithologies, environments and more.
