+## Introduction
+
+Most Americans (and even most Los Angeles residents) experienced the riots, not through direct experience, but as a TV spectacle. Across the country, viewers took in images of burning, looting, and chaotic violence—often shot from above by news helicopters. This PBS NewsHour excerpt, from a piece entitled “Covering the Coverage,” begins by showing clips of Black youths beating white truck driver Reginald Denny in the heat of the riots. The news played a prominent role in the Denny assault trial (discussed in the clip) and arguably became the most iconic image of the riots. The NewsHour piece also features several media commentators grappling with the ethical responsibilities of TV networks covering incendiary events in real time.
