+
+Much of the attention on the Rodney King trial and the LA Riots focused on a two-dimensional story of racial antagonism: white vs. Black, or Black vs. Korean. But Los Angeles was an extremely diverse, multi-ethnic city with a large Hispanic population, and the challenges and frustrations faced by many Latino residents were similar to those of Black residents. Thus, it should not be surprising that Latino neighborhoods in Los Angeles also experienced widespread disorder during the Riots. This May 1992 segment from The MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour delved specifically into Latino communities in Los Angeles and their experience during the riots. The report draws interesting contrasts between Pico Union (a dense neighborhood made up of recent Central American immigrants, which experienced significant looting and destruction) and East Los Angeles (a longstanding Mexican American neighborhood that saw relatively little unrest).
