Feature Consideration: 3D Map Mode for Elevation Display and Indoor Venue Support
Summary
For event venues and complex deployments, a 3D map mode (similar to Google Earth) would allow elevation to be meaningfully displayed alongside node positions.
Use Cases
- RF propagation visualization — Better understanding of signal behavior across elevation changes (mountain/hillside deployments, multi-story venues)
- Indoor building views — Support for custom 3D tilesets enabling indoor building cutaway views for monitoring nodes inside structures (where GPS is available)
- Event venue deployments — Understanding floor-level node placement when managing large indoor events or multi-floor venues
Implementation Considerations
- Would likely require a renderer capable of 3D (e.g. Cesium, Mapbox GL 3D) vs the current 2D stack
- Indoor GPS accuracy is a limiting factor for precise floor-level positioning
- Custom tileset hosting/management adds operational complexity
- Lighter-weight interim step: Surface elevation as a data field on nodes and include it in the neighbor link analysis view — this could provide value without a full 3D renderer
Scope
This is filed as a long-term consideration and discussion item, not an immediate feature request. Happy to discuss feasibility, alternative approaches, or interim steps.
