5. Setup and Configuration

This section details the setup and configuration aspects for the RAG system components.

5.1. Backend Service (backend)

The backend service is responsible for managing the vector knowledge base. It utilizes PostgreSQL with the pgvector extension to store and efficiently query document embeddings. Its primary role is to provide an API for storing new document embeddings and for retrieving existing document embeddings based on vector similarity searches.

5.2. Environment Variables

Several critical environment variables are required for the backend and ai-engine services to function correctly within the RAG architecture:

  • BACKEND_API_URL: Used by the ai-engine service to connect to the backend service's API endpoints for indexing and searching documents.
  • DATABASE_URL: Used by the backend service to establish a connection with the PostgreSQL database where the pgvector extension is enabled and document embeddings are stored.
  • API Keys for Embedding Model: If a commercial embedding model service (e.g., OpenAI, Cohere) is chosen for implementation, an API key such as OPENAI_API_KEY would be necessary for the ai-engine to generate embeddings.

For a more comprehensive list of environment variables, refer to the .env.example files located in the root directories of both the backend and ai-engine services.

5.3. Embedding Model

The system is designed to use an embedding model to convert text documents into dense vector representations, which are then stored and used for similarity searches.

The default embedding dimension currently used throughout the system is 1536. This can be observed in ai-engine/src/utils/vector_db_client.py for client-side operations and in backend/src/db/models.py for the database schema. This dimension is notably compatible with OpenAI's text-embedding-ada-002 model.

Important Implementation Note: The actual logic for generating these embeddings (e.g., making an API call to OpenAI or using a local sentence transformer model) is a TODO item. This functionality is notably missing in:

  • ai-engine/src/utils/vector_db_client.py (within the get_embedding method, which currently returns dummy vectors).
  • ai-engine/src/tools/search_tool.py (which relies on vector_db_client.py for query embeddings, thus also using dummy vectors).

Currently, both VectorDBClient.get_embedding() and, by extension, SearchTool and VectorDBClient.index_document() use placeholder/dummy vectors. When the actual embedding generation is implemented, the choice of model may necessitate specific API keys (as mentioned in Environment Variables) and corresponding client libraries.

5.4. Populating the Knowledge Base

Populating the knowledge base is a crucial step for the RAG system to function effectively. The conceptual process is as follows:

  1. Document Processing: Various documents (e.g., text files, Markdown (.md) articles, code snippets, API documentation) are identified and prepared for indexing.
  2. Embedding Generation (Pending Implementation): For each processed document, an embedding vector is generated. As noted, the actual generation of these embeddings (e.g., via a call to an embedding model API) is currently a TODO and uses dummy vectors.
  3. Indexing via VectorDBClient: The ai-engine's VectorDBClient class, specifically its index_document method, is used to send the document content (or a suitable representation of it) along with its (currently dummy) embedding vector to the backend service.
  4. Storage in backend: The backend service receives this data and stores the document content and its associated embedding in the document_embeddings table within the PostgreSQL database.

The VectorDBClient also generates a content_hash for each document. This hash is stored by the backend and can be used for deduplication purposes, preventing the same document from being indexed multiple times.

Current Limitation: It's important to reiterate that VectorDBClient.index_document currently sends dummy placeholder vectors to the backend. The practical utility of the RAG system will significantly increase once actual embeddings are generated and stored.

Typically, scripts or utility functions would be developed to automate the batch processing and indexing of a large corpus of documents into the knowledge base. For the qualitative aspects of selecting and preparing these documents, refer to the "Knowledge Base Curation" points in section 6. Architecture and Design Choices.

6. Architecture and Design Choices

This section details the specific architectural decisions and component design for the RAG system powering the 'portkit' concept. It outlines how the backend and ai-engine services interact to store, retrieve, and utilize knowledge.

6.1. Knowledge Base Storage (backend service)

The foundation of the RAG system is its knowledge base, which is managed by the backend service.

  • Database Technology: PostgreSQL is used as the primary database, augmented with the pgvector extension. pgvector enables efficient storage and similarity searching of high-dimensional vector embeddings.
  • document_embeddings Table: This dedicated table stores the core information for the RAG system. Its structure is defined in backend/src/db/models.py as follows:
    • id (UUID, primary key): A unique identifier for each embedding entry.
    • embedding (VECTOR(1536)): Stores the actual vector representation of the document content. The dimension 1536 is chosen for compatibility with models like OpenAI's text-embedding-ada-002.
    • document_source (String): An identifier indicating the origin of the document (e.g., a filename, URL, or knowledge base category).
    • content_hash (String, unique, indexed): An MD5 hash of the original document content. This is crucial for deduplication, preventing identical documents from being indexed multiple times. An index on this column ensures fast lookups.
    • created_at (DateTime): Timestamp indicating when the entry was first created.
    • updated_at (DateTime): Timestamp indicating when the entry was last updated.
  • Embedding Dimension: As mentioned, the embedding dimension is fixed at 1536. This is a critical parameter that must align with the chosen embedding model (see Section 5.3).

6.2. Backend API Endpoints (backend service)

The backend service exposes API endpoints, defined in backend/src/api/embeddings.py, for managing and querying document embeddings. Pydantic models in backend/src/models/embedding_models.py define the data structures for requests and responses.

  • POST /api/v1/embeddings/:

    • Purpose: Creates a new document embedding entry or retrieves an existing one if it matches the provided content_hash.
    • Request Body: Expects a DocumentEmbeddingCreate Pydantic model, which includes:
      • embedding: The vector embedding (list of floats).
      • document_source: String indicating the document's origin.
      • content_hash: The MD5 hash of the document content.
    • Response Body: Returns a DocumentEmbeddingResponse Pydantic model, containing the full entry details (ID, embedding, source, hash, and timestamps).
    • Behavior: If an entry with the given content_hash already exists, the backend returns a 200 OK status with the existing entry's details. If no such entry exists, a new one is created, and a 201 Created status is returned.
  • POST /api/v1/embeddings/search/:

    • Purpose: Searches for document embeddings that are semantically similar to a given query embedding.
    • Request Body: Expects an EmbeddingSearchQuery Pydantic model, which includes:
      • query_embedding: The vector embedding of the search query.
      • limit (optional, default: 5): The maximum number of similar documents to return.
    • Response Body: Returns a list of DocumentEmbeddingResponse objects, ordered by similarity.
    • Behavior: The search is performed using L2 distance (Euclidean distance) as the similarity metric within pgvector. This finds the "closest" document embeddings to the query embedding in the vector space.

6.3. AI Engine Components (ai-engine service)

The ai-engine service houses the components responsible for interacting with the backend's RAG capabilities and integrating them into the AI agent workflows.

  • VectorDBClient (ai-engine/src/utils/vector_db_client.py):

    • Role: Acts as an HTTP client for the ai-engine to communicate with the backend service's /api/v1/embeddings/ endpoints.
    • Key Method: index_document(document_content: str, document_source: str):
      • Calculates an MD5 content_hash of the document_content.
      • Current Limitation & TODO: This method currently generates and sends dummy (placeholder) embedding vectors of dimension 1536. The actual generation of meaningful embeddings (e.g., by calling an external model like OpenAI's text-embedding-ada-002 or using a local sentence transformer) is a critical TODO item.
      • It then calls the POST /api/v1/embeddings/ endpoint on the backend service to store the document and its (currently dummy) embedding.
  • SearchTool (ai-engine/src/tools/search_tool.py):

    • Role: Designed as a Crew AI tool, enabling AI agents to query the knowledge base.
    • Current Status: The core _run(query: str) method is currently a placeholder and does not perform a real search.
    • Intended Functionality (and critical TODOs):
      1. Accept a natural language query string from an agent.
      2. TODO: Generate a meaningful embedding vector for this query string. This requires implementing embedding generation logic, similar to the TODO in VectorDBClient.
      3. TODO: Utilize the VectorDBClient (or a direct HTTP call) to send this query embedding to the POST /api/v1/embeddings/search/ endpoint of the backend service.
      4. TODO: Receive the list of similar document embeddings (and their associated content/metadata) from the backend.
      5. TODO: Format these search results into a coherent string (e.g., a list of text snippets or document summaries) that can be used by the LLM part of the agent.
  • KnowledgeBaseAgent (ai-engine/src/agents/knowledge_base_agent.py):

    • Role: A conceptual Crew AI agent that would be equipped with the SearchTool.
    • Purpose: This agent's primary function would be to leverage the SearchTool to retrieve relevant information from the knowledge base. This retrieved context would then be used to inform its responses, analysis, or decision-making processes, effectively making it a RAG-enabled agent.

6.4. LLM Integration and Prompt Engineering

Designing effective prompts is crucial for instructing LLMs on how to best utilize the retrieved context (once the SearchTool provides it) for their specific tasks, such as analysis, design, or translation in the context of 'portkit'. The quality of prompts directly impacts the relevance and accuracy of the LLM's output when using RAG.

6.5. Agent Communication Workflow

Defining clear workflows for how specialized agents in the Crew AI setup pass information—including RAG-retrieved insights from the SearchTool—to each other is essential for collaborative problem-solving. This ensures that knowledge gained by one agent can be effectively utilized by others.

6.6. Knowledge Base Curation

Meticulously selecting, ingesting, and preprocessing high-quality data sources for both Java Edition modding and Bedrock Edition Add-Ons remains paramount. This includes official documentation, community wikis, forums, and extensive open-source code repositories. The process of populating the knowledge base, as described in Section 5.4, is an ongoing task that directly impacts the RAG system's effectiveness.

6.7. Embedding Generation for Knowledge Sources

As a foundational step, a utility for generating text embeddings (e.g., using sentence-transformers) has been implemented. This allows for the vectorization of document chunks derived from mod information (like code comments, descriptions, or analyzed features), which is crucial for enabling semantic search and retrieval components of the RAG pipeline. This component is integrated into the JavaAnalyzerAgent to initially process and embed textual data from mods.

6.8. Continuous Evaluation and Iteration

Implementing mechanisms to evaluate the quality of the RAG system's outputs (i.e., the relevance of retrieved documents) and the overall effectiveness of 'portkit' is vital. This allows for ongoing refinement of the knowledge bases, embedding strategies, retrieval parameters, and agent logic.

6.9. Handling Ambiguity

Developing strategies for how agents should proceed when retrieved information is incomplete, conflicting, or when direct translations or mappings between modding platforms (Java vs. Bedrock) are not readily available in the knowledge base is a key challenge. This might involve multi-step retrieval, asking clarifying questions, or flagging areas for human review.

8. Usage Examples (Conceptual)

The following examples are conceptual and aim to illustrate the intended functionality of RAG-enabled agents within the 'portkit' system, particularly how the SearchTool would be utilized. It's important to remember that the SearchTool (as detailed in Section 6.3) currently requires further implementation, specifically around generating meaningful query embeddings and calling the backend search API.

Example: Using KnowledgeBaseAgent with SearchTool

Scenario: An AI agent, which is an instance of KnowledgeBaseAgent (or any agent equipped with the SearchTool), is assigned a task that requires specific knowledge about Minecraft modding.

  • Task: "Draft an overview of how to create a custom flying entity in Bedrock Edition, highlighting common components used."

Agent's Internal Process (Conceptual):

  1. Identify Knowledge Gap: The agent's core LLM recognizes that fulfilling this task requires detailed, up-to-date information about Bedrock Edition entity development, which might not be fully covered by its static training data.
  2. Formulate Query: The agent (or its underlying logic) formulates a concise search query relevant to the task. For instance: "Bedrock custom flying entity components".
  3. Execute SearchTool: The agent invokes the SearchTool with the formulated query:

It's important to ensure your entity also has a minecraft:physics component defined, as this can affect the activation of flight behaviors. Value of RAG Demonstrated:

This example illustrates how RAG, through the SearchTool, provides specific, contextually relevant, and potentially up-to-date information (like the forum tip about the minecraft:physics component) directly to the LLM at the time of task execution. This significantly improves the quality, accuracy, and practical value of the agent's output compared to relying solely on its pre-trained knowledge.

9. Conclusion
