<h2>ROTational EXcitation of ions by electron impact (ROTEX)</h2>
<p>This is a semi-post-processing code for the UKRmol+ suite <a id="loc-1" href="#loc-4" role="doc-biblioref">[1]</a> of electron and positron scattering codes that can determine integrated electron-impact rotational excitation cross sections from pre-calculated K-matrices; compatible and originally intended for ionic target molecules. It is semi-post-processing in the sense that, without K-matrices, it can still calculated excited state lifetimes and cross sections in the Coulomb-Born approximation. <p>This code implements :</p>
<ol>
<li>the <em>Coulomb-Born (CB) approximation</em></li>
<li><em>Multichannel Quantum Defect Theory (MQDT)</em>.</li>
</ol>
<p>One or both can be used to determine electron-impact rotational excitation cross sections. If both are used, then the so-called Born closure/completion will be used for electron-impact transitions that appear in the MQDT and CB cross sections to account for partial waves that are not included in the MQDT treatment:</p>

<p>to download dependencies and build the project. Fpm alway uses all dependencies because (as of writing this) it is not yet capable of using the C preprocessor to handle optional <code>USE</code> statements.</p>
<h4>Building without fpm</h4>
<p>In the package directory, just run</p>
<p><code>make</code></p>
<p>to install the executable to <code>bin/rotex</code>. The dependency repositories are automatically assumed to be included in <code>external/</code> (see the Makefile for more details). To omit the use of <code>CDMSreader</code>, <code>Forbear</code>, or <code>OpenMP</code>, just set the corresponding environmental variable to 0. For example,</p>

<h3>Usage</h3>
<p>An executable will be built by fpm which can be run directly, but fpm can also be invoked to run the code, which expects a namelist file to be given via stdin, i.e.</p>

<h4>Compatibility with different operating systems</h4>
<p>This has only been tested on Linux-based systems for now. In principle, it should work on others but that is not a guarantee.</p>
<h4>Structure of the input (namelist) files</h4>
<p>Namelists are used to read in values to whole groups of variables that will control program execution. A namelist group name is defined with the ampersand (&) and the namelist group is terminated with with a foward slash (/). The program contains three namelists:</p>

<p>The namelist variables are declared in <code>src/rotex__reading.f</code> The order of the namelist groups in the input file is unimportant. Example namelists that should produce successful runes are given in the <code>example</code> directory.</p>
<h5><span style="text-decoration: underline">&control_namelist</span></h5>
<p>The first and main namelist group is always used: <strong>&control_namelist</strong>. It controls the main flow of the program and contains the following variables.</p>

This requires the output of electron-scattering calculations, which is detailed below.</p>

<h4>Structure of the K-matrix data</h4>
<p>If using K-matrices for the MQDT approach, there are two critical options to pick between:</p>
<h5>kmat_output_type: “ukrmol+”</h5>
<p>This format uses data taken directly from the output of the UKRmol+ scattering suite <a href="#loc-4" role="doc-biblioref">[1]</a>, run with the UKRmol scripts <a id="loc-2" href="#loc-5" role="doc-biblioref">[2]</a>. It requires <strong>channel</strong> files and <strong>K-matrix</strong> files. The channel files are expected to live in the directory determined by <code>channels_dir</code> and have the naming format</p>
<p><code>channels.geom1.<<SPINMULT>>.<<IRREP>></code></p>
<p>because the code currently only expects one geometry for the target molecule (no vibration). The K-matrices are expected to live in the directory specified by <code>kmat_dir</code> and have a similar naming format:</p>
