Manager Standard of Excellence

Skills

  1. You rely on your expertise in your field to offer guidance and feedback to your report on technical approach, technical execution, project management, and navigating company culture.
  2. You maintain visibility into your report's job performance, professional development, and internal communications. You uphold consistent management practices, including 1-1s, performance reviews, and work reviews.
  3. You maintain accurate, comprehensive, and progressive documentation of your report's performance and progress on goals.
  4. You set clear expectations and ensure your report knows what "exceeds expectations" looks like in practice. You intervene on performance issues early and address them with your report promptly and directly.

Engagement

  1. You're an active participant in internal manager forums (Manager Community project, Department Heads project, meet-up workshops, etc).
  2. You conduct regular, productive 1-1s with your report that hold time for professional development, not just status checks.
  3. You privately and publicly recognize small and big wins to boost team morale.
  4. You deliver prompt, specific, clearly stated feedback, both positive and corrective. You follow through to ensure your feedback leads to noticeable change.
  5. You foster a team environment where your report feels comfortable raising concerns, asking questions, and admitting mistakes without fear of repercussions.

Coachability

  1. You seek out advice and feedback from fellow managers in appropriate settings like in leadership-dedicated Basecamp projects, at meet-up workshops, or in private.
  2. When asked, you offer high-quality leadership advice and feedback that's grounded in experience.
  3. You actively seek feedback from your report on how to better support them. You incorporate their feedback when possible, and you respond to any corrective notes with curiosity, not defensiveness.
