New message counter is including messages sent

When Bob send a message to Dave, the notification viewlet shows a new message on Bob's inbox.

Hi Hector,
Just to check the current code change for the viewlet is that no inbox icon will show if there are no new messages. Therefore the user will not be able to access their inbox via the icon if they have read all messages.

is this correct? Or have I missed something.

that's correct; the user can always access her inbox using the user action on the menu.

I prefer UX consistency, i.e. an icon without message count rather than no icon.

+1 to icon without new messages.
The icon without the number show to the user that they doesn't have any new message.
If we hide the icon, user can think: "Hey, my inbox disappeared!"
