I’m encountering a persistent error in CVAT where annotations fail to save. The UI shows repeated pop-ups saying “Could not save annotations” and lists the shapes as [object Object] instead of meaningful details. This occurs while saving the annotations, and the error appears multiple times in a loop, preventing any progress. The annotations are getting deleted when reloaded in few frames, even the already saved . I’ve attached a screenshot of the error message for reference.

While working on mask-related annotations in CVAT, the application intermittently fails to save newly created shapes. The issue occurs during normal annotation workflows and does not have a consistent reproduction pattern yet. However, it frequently happens when drawing and saving masks annotation often recently.(my cvat version is 2.46.0)

When the error occurs, CVAT throws a 400 (Bad Request) response on the endpoint:

PATCH /api/jobs/<job_id>/annotations?action=create

The UI displays an error referencing invalid shapes data.

Observed Behavior

Mask shapes appear to be created correctly in the UI.
On auto-save or manual save, CVAT attempts to send created shapes to the server.
The server returns 400 Bad Request, causing the save process to fail.
Errors repeat for each save attempt.

Expected Behavior

Mask annotations should save successfully without server errors.
CVAT should not send malformed or invalid shapes payloads.

I also checked the cvat_server container logs, but no unusual errors or warnings are shown at the time of the failure. The server logs appear normal, and there is no corresponding traceback or validation error on the backend despite the frontend receiving a 400 Bad Request response.

I also encounter this problem when there are several masks to annotate on an image. (Microbiological annotation)

@azhavoro You may be able to reproduce this error by using several images with a considerable number of masks.

Thank you, @ainayves, for outlining the reproduction steps. I’ve been encountering this issue for quite some time while annotating masks in CVAT. Having this resolved would be extremely helpful @azhavoro, as it consistently affects the annotation workflow.

You should be able to solve this error by looking at network tab in chrome dev tools:
Response of invalid Request may show an error for one mask, e.g.: "points": [ "invalid length for shape type 'mask'" ]
Preview tab should then give the index of invalid mask and Payload at this index gives the frame index in question:
{ ... "points": [ 0, 0, 0, 0 ], ... "frame": <frame_index>, ... }

After correcting the invalid mask instances saving should be possible again.

Thanks for the detailed explanation @wr0112358 . I’ll look into this using the Network tab in Chrome DevTools and try correcting the invalid mask instances as suggested. I’ll update you if the issue persists or if I need further assistance.

@wr0112358 and @azhavoro Thank you for the solution. Is there any possibility of making changes in the current CVAT application itself to resolve this issue? It’s very difficult to manually verify these details in almost every frame, and it becomes even more challenging when CVAT is hosted on a system used by multiple users.
