npm 8 went end-of-life alongside Node 16 back in December 2019. Is there still a compelling reason to keep supporting it almost 6 years later?
Right now we’re carrying a fair amount of special-case logic in npm_and_yarn just to accommodate npm 8. At this point, I’d expect most users to have moved off that version, so it’s worth questioning whether that complexity is still justified.
