1. I sent a message on EW
2. It never showed up on EX
3. It showed up on other clients.

What did you expect?

Never ever lose messages

What happened instead?

Looks like event-cache and background-refresh raced and lost the message; see rageshake.

It is related to an existing architecutre issue in the SDK: matrix-org/matrix-rust-sdk#5500. The pause() mechanism that was recently introduced makes the problem more visible.

We decided to disable the feature while we find a fix on the SDK side and test it throughout the rest of the stack.

Even with the feature disabled i'm still getting all sorts of problems with inbound events getting lost. In order to unblock my experiments I got Fable to propose a fix here: matrix-org/matrix-rust-sdk@a2ce71d otherwise i just kept hunting bugs due to missing events.
