Bulk Disputes Endpoint Implementation Summary

Issue: #812 - Add a bounded bulk endpoint for dispute operations

Key Technical Decisions Explained

Why Bulk Update (not Create)?

  • Real-world use case: Admin bulk-resolving disputes after investigation ✓
  • Higher financial stakes than create operations ✓
  • Requires per-item state transition validation ✓
  • More interesting feature than bulk-create (users open disputes individually) ✓

Why 50-Item Cap?

  • Each item triggers 2 notifications (email + web) = 100 notifications worst-case
  • Rate limit = 300 req/min = 5 req/sec; 50-item cap prevents single request from consuming quota
  • Lower than typical CRUD (100–200) due to side effect complexity
  • Easily adjustable if infrastructure changes

Why Per-Item Isolation?

  • Financial safety: One dispute's failure must not affect another's escrow release
  • One item's side effect failure must not roll back its own database write
  • Matches HTTP semantics: 200 + per-item error is cleaner than wholesale 400 on first failure
  • Clients can retry failed items independently

Why Cascading Side Effects Are Fire-and-Forget?

  • Dispute update should succeed even if notifications fail (operations are independent)
  • Notification failures are logged for ops team investigation
  • In production, this would be a reliable queue (not in scope for this PR)

Considerations for Review

🔴 Financial Risk (Maintainer Review Recommended)

This endpoint carries more risk than typical CRUD because:

  • Resolving disputes releases escrowed funds
  • Bulk operations on multiple disputes in one request could affect fund flow across parties
  • Key question: Is the per-item transaction isolation sufficient for your escrow consistency model?

Key question: Are these transitions correct for your dispute lifecycle?

🟢 Operational Notes

  • Rate limiting already applied via disputes tier (300 req/min)
  • Monitor /api/v1/disputes/batch for side-effect failures (logged at WARN level)
  • Batch cap (50) can be adjusted if escrow/notification infrastructure changes

  1. Code Review: Verify state machine transitions match your system
  2. Financial Review: Confirm per-item transaction isolation meets your consistency requirements
  3. Testing: Run integration tests against your escrow subsystem if available
  4. Deployment: Deploy normally; no database migrations required (demo uses in-memory store)
  5. Monitoring: Watch for side-effect failures in logs post-deployment
