- Identified existing single-item dispute endpoints (GET, POST, PATCH, DELETE)
- Chose operation: Bulk update (PATCH) — most realistic use case (admin bulk-resolving disputes after investigation)
- Analyzed state machine: open → under_review/resolved/escalated, with terminal state on resolved
- Verified financial implications: Resolving disputes triggers escrow state changes and notifications
- Designed per-item isolation: Each item processed independently within its own transaction boundary
- Implemented batch cap: 50 items max (justified by per-item side effects: notifications, escrow changes)
- Built validation: Schema validation rejects empty batch, over-cap, invalid status values
- Followed existing repo conventions (auth middleware, error handling, Zod validation)
- Reused single-item operation's validation/business logic per item
- No code duplication — each item delegates to

- Lower than typical CRUD (100–200) due to side effect complexity
- Easily adjustable if infrastructure changes
- Financial safety: One dispute's failure must not affect another's escrow release
- One item's side effect failure must not roll back its own database write
- Matches HTTP semantics: 200 + per-item error is cleaner than wholesale 400 on first failure
- Clients can retry failed items independently
- Dispute update should succeed even if notifications fail (operations are independent)
- Notification failures are logged for ops team investigation
- In production, this would be a reliable queue (not in scope for this PR)

- Resolving disputes releases escrowed funds
- Bulk operations on multiple disputes in one request could affect fund flow across parties
- Key question: Is the per-item transaction isolation sufficient for your escrow consistency model?
