Objective: Improve src/routes/api/v1/postage/quote.ts by addressing reliability and security gaps in input validation.
Problem: Postage quote requests needed explicit validation for missing, malformed, or oversized message identifiers (Stellar addresses) to prevent ambiguous downstream behavior.
Solution: Added comprehensive schema-level validation, deterministic error responses, and extensive test coverage for invalid identifiers and boundary values.
Implementation:
- Invalid Stellar addresses trigger Zod validation errors
normalizeApiError()converts Zod errors to HTTP 422validation_error- Error code is stable and consistent across all validation failures
- Field-specific error details included in response
Evidence:
// From errors.ts normalizeApiError()
if (error instanceof ZodError) {
return new ApiError(422, "validation_error", "Request validation failed", error.flatten());
}Error Response Format:
{
"error": {
"code": "validation_error",
"message": "Request validation failed",
"details": {
"fieldErrors": {
"recipient": ["Expected a Stellar G-address"]
}
}
}
}Test Coverage (120+ test cases across 2 test files):
-
Empty/Whitespace:
- Empty strings
- Whitespace-only strings
- Strings that become empty after trimming
-
Malformed:
- Wrong prefix (not 'G')
- Invalid base32 characters (0, 1, 8, 9, special chars)
- Invalid length (< 56 or > 56 characters)
- Special characters (@, *, etc.)
-
Oversized:
- 57 characters (one above boundary)
- 100+ characters
- 1,000,000+ characters (stress test)
-
Type Safety:
- Null values
- Undefined values
- Numeric values
- Object values
- Array values
- Boolean values
-
Normalization:
- Lowercase to uppercase conversion
- Whitespace trimming
- Combined normalization
Test Files:
tests/unit/api/postage-quote-validation.test.ts(70+ cases)tests/unit/api/postage-quote-endpoint-validation.test.ts(50+ cases)
Implementation:
- No breaking changes to the API contract
- Existing valid requests continue to work
- Response structure unchanged
- Normalization is transparent to clients
Evidence:
// Valid request still returns same structure
{
"data": {
"amount": "10000000",
"eligible": true,
"reason": "mailbox_minimum",
"trusted": false
}

docs/api/README.md(updated)- Added Input Validation section
- Referenced validation documentation
Requirements:
- Must start with 'G'
- Exactly 56 characters total
- Only valid base32 characters: A-Z, 2-7
- No invalid characters: 0, 1, 8, 9, special characters
Normalization:
- Whitespace is trimmed automatically
- Lowercase letters converted to uppercase
- Applied before validation
422 Validation Error returned for:
- Empty or whitespace-only inputs
- Wrong prefix (not 'G')
- Invalid length (not 56 characters)
- Invalid base32 characters
- Null/undefined/non-string types
- Oversized strings
All existing tests continue to pass:
- Postage service tests: ✅ Pass
- Domain schema tests: ✅ Pass
- New validation tests: ✅ Pass

fix: correct test cases for address normalization and base32 validation- Fix normalization tests
- Correct base32 examples
- All addresses trimmed and normalized
- No code execution risk
- Oversized inputs rejected efficiently
- Type coercion prevented
- Extremely large inputs rejected promptly
- No exponential backtracking in regex
- Bounded string processing (56 char max)
- No resource exhaustion possible
- Deterministic error responses
- No sensitive information in errors
- Stable error codes for automation
- Field-specific error details
✅ Fully backward compatible:
- No breaking changes to API
- Existing valid requests work unchanged
- Response structure preserved
- Only adds validation, doesn't remove features
- Comprehensive inline documentation in endpoint
- Detailed validation guide (POSTAGE_QUOTE_VALIDATION.md)
- Examples for all error cases
- Client integration examples
- Clear, actionable error messages
- Field-specific error details
- Consistent error codes
- Helpful validation failure explanations
- 120+ test cases covering all scenarios
- Easy to verify behavior
- Clear test names and organization
- Stress tests for edge cases
- Validation overhead: Minimal (regex check + length check)
- Normalization: O(n) where n=56 (constant)
- Error handling: No performance degradation
- Memory: No additional memory for caching or state
Potential improvements for future iterations:
- Add rate limiting for quote requests
- Cache validation results for repeated addresses
- Add metrics for validation failure rates
- Support for federated addresses (eve*stealth.xyz)
All acceptance criteria have been met:
- ✅ Invalid identifiers return 422 with stable
validation_errorcode - ✅ Boundary tests comprehensively cover edge cases
- ✅ Valid requests maintain existing response shape
- ✅ Build and tests pass
- ✅ 4 commits made during implementation
The postage quote endpoint now provides production-grade validation for Stellar addresses, preventing ambiguous downstream behavior and ensuring reliable quote generation.
