How to cite fitsio?

Is there a paper, Zenodo reference or other DOI to use when citing fitsio? I tried to find a citation file in the code, but I couldn't find anything obvious.

I've never done anything like that. Would it be sufficient to use the github URL?

The GitHub URL is a start but @beckermr's suggestion is the best way to go. I think if you look in the Astropy developer docs and their docs on affiliated packages there is additional information about Zenodo.

I tested this out on one of my own repos to see how it works. See here: https://zenodo.org/records/14902520

It generates a set of citable DOIs.

• You get a unique DOI per release. This is specific to a release made in the github UI, not just a tag IIUIC.
• You get a DOI that always resolves to the latest version.

We could recommend folks cite the DOI that always resolves to the latest version.

Another option is ASCL which lets you create a one-time, citeable DOI, in a few minutes.
