Screenshot attribution

Provenance for every image mirrored into this repo. Screenshots of GPL-licensed software are themselves generally GPL, and both the GPL and CC-BY-SA require attribution — so an image with no row here should not be in the repo.

One row per file. When adding images, record where it came from, who made it, and under what licence.

Blueprints with no screenshots, on purpose

An empty screenshots array is a decision, not an omission — the detail sheet simply renders without a gallery. bun run validate warns about it so the gap stays visible; the warning is expected for:

  • The server imagesalmalinux-9, almalinux-10, debian-12, debian-13, fedora-44, fedora-coreos, flatcar, rocky-9, rocky-10, ubuntu-24.04, ubuntu-26.04. These boot to a console login and have no desktop; five invented frames would misrepresent what the user gets. A screenshot of a login prompt is not worth 200 KB in a cloned repo.
  • Windowswindows-10, windows-11. See below.

Preferred source: capture our own

The cleanest images are the ones we take ourselves from the guest a blueprint installs — no third-party licence to honour, and they show exactly the version and default configuration HexOS ships rather than whatever the vendor's marketing page happens to show.

The install pipeline already screenshots guests to verify unattended installs (virsh screenshot, which writes PNG whatever extension you give it), so the mechanism exists; what a blueprint needs is five representative frames — the installed desktop, the app menu, settings, a file manager, a browser — captured once per version bump that changes the look.

What must not be mirrored

Vendor marketing images are generally not redistributable. Windows screenshots are Microsoft's and are covered by their brand and media terms; do not mirror them into this public repo without sign-off. A Windows blueprint may ship with an empty screenshots array — the detail sheet simply renders without a gallery.

Exception: Windows (no free licence)

The rows below are the ONLY images in this repo without a free licence, and they do not satisfy the rule at the top of this file. They are our own captures — a HexOS lab VM installed from the user's own retail media on AMDHW-Dev, 2026-08-07 — but authorship of the capture does not carry authorship of what is in the frame: the Windows shell, its stock wallpapers, and third-party tiles (Office, LinkedIn, Skype, Solitaire) all remain their owners' copyright. Microsoft's screenshot guidelines permit limited use in some contexts; that judgement has NOT been made here.

Pending legal sign-off. Do not treat these as cleared for production.

Icon attribution

Brand icons under _icons/ are mirrored verbatim from the HexOS frontend's bundled artwork (eshtek/hexos-platform, packages/frontend/public/icons/vms/), so a blueprint's icon ships with the blueprint instead of requiring a platform release. Each file is the upstream project's logo mark: these are trademarks of their respective projects (Canonical, the Fedora Project, AlmaLinux OS Foundation, the Debian Project, RESF, SUSE, the OpenWrt Project, System76, the Linux Mint team, Zorin Group, the Home Assistant project, the Flatcar/Bazzite/CachyOS teams, Microsoft, Valve Corporation, and the Linux/Tux mark), used here nominatively to identify the software the blueprint installs. If an upstream project objects or rebrands, replace or remove the file here — nothing else references it.
