Streams Offering 1440p Don't Work

Description:
When opening a stream that supports the new 2K format from Twitch, the screen remains black and only the loading icon appears. Even when changing the stream resolution to a lower setting via the menu, nothing changes.

Expected Behavior:
If the stream cannot be played in 1440p, it should still be playable when switching to a smaller resolution.

Also, please share the streamer and the VOD of that stream so I can review them. This app must not support HEVC or AV1, so the stream must be 1440p AVC. If is I don't understand the issue, as 1440p must work the same way as 1080p or at least not prevent 1080p from working, let me check all of that.

I also noticed that the TV app shows 1080p as the source, whereas it is 1440p in my browser om PC.

Because it is not enabled in the app to show, it must not be a problem.

So are you complaining that you can't see the 1440p or that the available 1080p is not working?

Just to clarify: if the stream has 2K as the source quality, it cannot be played—regardless of the selected resolution. All streams with 1080p or lower as the source work without any problems.

I reviewed what's happening here.

The new streams use an HLS playlist with fragmented MP4 (.mp4) segments, following a more recent HLS standard with an initialization segment (EXT-X-MAP). Example:

Some Samsung TVs, especially older models or those with outdated firmware, do not fully support fragmented MP4 (fMP4) in HLS, particularly the EXT-X-MAP initialization segments. As a result, playback fails on these devices when the stream uses .mp4 segments.

The most reliable solution is to use a player that supports fragmented MP4 properly. However, this introduces another challenge:

Third-party players on Samsung Tizen TVs are notoriously inconsistent.
Each TV runs a different firmware version, and player compatibility can vary significantly between models and firmware versions. This makes it difficult to guarantee stable playback across the entire range of Samsung devices.

💡 Recommendation
The safest approach for maximum compatibility with Samsung TVs is to stick with .ts segments when possible. Alternatively, fallback mechanisms or player detection strategies may be needed for devices that cannot handle .mp4-based HLS streams.

I'm thinking about trying to solve this somehow, as less and less streams are playable.

While I'm a software engineer, I work in a completely different domain with different software stack. I'm not well informed in streaming codes and inner workings, nor Tizen development.

I guess this isn't an issue as long as I just create a fork of this project for my TV model (Q70R) and find a player that's working with that. I'm probably not the guy to solve this issue for everyone, but maybe a subset of users can also benefit. But how do I go by using a third party player? Would I just use https://github.com/chriswiggins/videojs-fmp4 and replace the <object type="application/avplayer"> part?
