Android Auto plugin on hold for now

After 5 days and reaching out across multiple platforms (Telegram included), I’m still sitting at only 6 testers for the Chromecast plugin and 10 for the Lyrics plugin.

Given Google's requirements for publishing and the ongoing lack of testers, I’m seriously reconsidering development of the Android Auto plugin. Without testers, it won’t get published, and right now it feels like a dead end.

I’ll keep you all in the loop, with whatever I decide, but that’s where my head’s at for now.

The Lyrics plugin and all the non google depended plugins (media data, live shows, external sources, etc), are not a big concern since I can release those on F-Droid, and development on those will continue. But for anything tied to Play Services like Chromecast and Auto, there’s no workaround, F-Droid won’t allow them, so Play Store is the only option.

I really like your work and wanted to offer testing the Android Auto Plugin whenever you need testers. Right now I have the Fdroid Version installed. Will that work?

Yes, plugins are universal and they will work wherever store you download them from. I will keep you posted for when the Auto plugin will be ready

I also would like to use Power Ampache with Android Auto! I don't need the full feature-set: Choose a playlist, play, pause skip forward/backward, shuffle.

hi, thanks, we're not testing anymore for that specific plugin, but I can give you early access to it if you want, or you can download the apk directly from the Telegram group. Let me know.

Control through an assistant (Google/ etc ) would be a great addition, especially while driving.

The Google Assistant relies on proprietary Play Services, which I can’t include if I want to keep the app fully open source. I could think about adding it as an optional plugin, like I did for Chromecast and Android Auto.

Hey, I love your app! I'm currently wondering if it's possible to download (not cache) transcoded tracks. I've tried several server configs to download transcoded FLACs to opus, but it failed. If this isn't possible right now, would be a good addition, in my opinion.

hi, this is actually already developed, but the functionality is not pushed yet because there was a bug on the backend where when I requested to download transcoded files, the Ampache backend returned a file with weird extensions (I think it was .raw?) that wasn't transcoded. The bug has probably been fixed at this point, since I reported it a couple of months ago, I will double check with the Ampache backend dev later, and if fixed I will push the feature in the next release.
I'll keep you posted in this thread.
